New OC gadget: Sonnet FM transmitter for iPod nano

sonnetpodfreqnano.jpgSonnet Technology in Irvine just introduced a PodFreq for the iPod nano for anyone who wants to attempt to listen to thier music collection over an empty FM radio channel.

dloipodnano.jpgThere are a lot of these wireless FM transmitters around (including the new black nanoTune for $70 from DLO, pictured on left).

But this, says Sonnet, is “the best sounding FM transmittter available for iPod nano.” Why? Other manufacturers’ products are designed around parts made for wireless microphones. The PodFreq plugs into the iPod’s line out signal – not the microphone jack, “which provides a clean, consistent sound level.” Again, that’s coming from Sonnet.

I haven’t been too impressed with FM transmitters in general but a few years ago a former editor helped me test the original PodFreq for the regular iPod (I hadn’t yet caved). She liked it and didn’t hear much traffic or interference listening to music over OC’s crowded FM radio dial.

Other specs and accessories of the new PodFreq: a dock and protective case, car charger and car cradle. Like the larger model, it has an antenna that extends. Price: $99.95.

I haven’t been impressed with the iPod branded FM transmitters either, although I have found a excellent alternative. I have an Audiovox XM receiver that sits on the dash of my car that also happens to have a line-in jack. Now, I don’t know if it uses a stronger transmitter or what, but why I plug my iPod into that jack I get the clearest audio from the units transmitter. This thing blows aways any other FM transmitter I’ve heard anywhere.
