Toy or tool? The Jitterbug cell phones have giant buttons and large letters. For $10 a month, the 911 number always works. Talk-time minutes cost extra. I’ve already gotten calls from, ahem, mature adults, who want more information on these. So, here ya go, today’s Your Gadget’s Gadget:
Jitterbug phones
Giant buttons and large letters are key to new cell phones from GreatCall in Del Mar (with design help from Samsung). But these are not toys. Jitterbug phones target the mature user.
Two phones, at $147 each, are available: the Jitterbug Dial with the usual 12-button number pad and the Jitterbug OneTouch with three main buttons to dial 911, the operator or any number set by the user.
Basic service (for emergency calls) is $10 a month. Minutes are extra, plus there is a $35 activation fee. Details at jitterbug.com.
