Earthlink starts Wi-Fi phone test in Anaheim

Anaheim, home to what is possibly OC’s largest concentration of public Wi-Fi, now gets first dibs on another Earthlink service: Wi-Fi phones.

The phones are from Accton Technology Corp. and, obviously, don’t need a regular telephone line to get service. These are VoIP (Voice-over-Internet-Protocol) phones, which use the Internet line to reach out and touch someone.

The great thing about using a Wi-Fi phone when you’re walking around within a 50-square-mile Wi-Fi area, you can use the phone like a cell phone. All it needs is Wi-Fi service (and a good charge). And, of course, an Earthlink VoIP account, which is expected to cost $14.95 a month for 500 anytime minutes, $24.95 for unlimited domestic minutes, plus a $100 one-time charge for equipment (the phone, cradle and a Wi-Fi router). But it’s currently free during the Anaheim beta test. Check out Earthlink’s Wi-Fi page for more info.
