The adventures of R2D2 and the postal service

First, I’m off for the rest of the week so blog posts will be sparse, if at all (depends on the Internet connection in the wilderness). So, I’m leaving you with an update on the Star Wars meets US Postal Service.

I spotted the R2D2 mail box on South Harbor in Anaheim and drove out of my way to take a picture. Yes, I’m a dork. Someone made me pose like C3PO. Good thing I don’t mind looking stupid. I remembered that the Post Office was adding Star Wars stamps but hadn’t kept up with what exactly was happening.

starwarsstampssml.jpgThe UPDATE: Richard Maher, who handles media calls for the OC region of Postal Service, reminded me the new stamps don’t come out until May 25 — 30 years after Star Wars first hit movie theaters everywhere. Drew Struzan, a Hollywood poster artist, did the design.

There are 400 R2D2 mail boxes, including 2 in Orange County. They were installed in March and will be up for a limited time. If you want to catch the two in OC, the locations are:

2260 S. Harbor Blvd., Anaheim
3014 Balboa Ave., Newport Beach

But stop by soon because…

… the Post Office plans to move them to new locations for more exposure.

“Here in Orange County, there are so many good locations so we thought why not move them around so people can see them,” Richard told me.

r2d2leia.jpgHis district, which is the Santa Ana/Van Nuys/Santa Barbara/Bakersfield area, got four mail boxes. And there’s a small chance that OC will get more than two when they decide to move the boxes around.

And if you do get a chance to look at one of these R2D2 units, there’s information about a contest to win tickets for four to the Star Wars Convention in Los Angeles. (Or you can just go to uspsjedimaster.com and look up all the information yourself.) The contest is to help pick a favorite Star Wars stamp. The US Post Office will release a sheet filled with just that character. As of this writing, the X-wing fighter is in the lead, by the way.

Have a good week! Back on Monday, April 23.
