Review: Toshiba adds camera, n and Labelflash

toshibap205web.jpgA computer needs extra oomph to get me interested in a review. Toshiba’s new line of Satellite P205s (in particular, the Satellite P205-S6287) offered me a few things: next-generation Wi-Fi (called “draft N”), a web cam (ho hum) and this cool new DVD-etching technology called Labelflash. But a bit more on Labelflash. This DVD label-making technology etches an image on the shiny metallic surface of the DVD. The DVD drive in the Toshiba burns the image right on the disc — no paper, no Sharpie, no ink necessary.

Actually, the monochromatic image sits just below the surface so the disc’s polycarbonate coating protects the image. Rub it, scratch it and scrub it and it won’t come off, like those CD-label stickers that once were all the rage. The downside: Labelflash is so new, it’s hardly available in the U.S. I got to play with one disc and thankfully didn’t mess it up. But I couldn’t find more discs anywhere, expect Amazon Japan.

Discs should be more widely available in the next month or so, according to FujiFilm at around $2 a piece. Perhaps when they are more widely available, I’ll do a head-to-head comparison between Labelflash and competitor LightScribe from Hewlett Packard.

I don’t like Toshiba doing this. They should have just joined with HP to make a possibly better LightScribe. No need to start creating parallel solutions. Even worse is this new one is embedded in a laptop (not easily changed out in the future). Then, you know there will be all of these people with this laptop in the future and they won’t be able to find the blank DVDs they need because LightScribe had taken over the market.
