iphonesonya100.jpgReporting from the front lines: Register reporter Sonya Smith was #10 #13 in line (a few people cut overnight) waiting to buy an iPhone at the Irvine Spectrum Apple store. Some 26 hours and several blog entries later, she’s the proud owner of her own iPod, Jimmy. Now for the video recap…

The Unveil: Unwrapping the iPhone. Me at home with my new iPhone. And, of course, I unwrapped Jimmy just in front of my iMac, Superman.

Friday, 6:23 p.m., 23 minutes after iPhones went on sale: I haven’t opened them up yet. They’re pretty frickin’ cool. I’m going to do the video unwrapping at home.

Right before 6 p.m., people were screaming. It was really, really tense and people were nervous that they weren’t going to get one. I was really nervous, like there was going to be a fight. Everyone was packed around the Apple store asking “What’s going on in there?”

Employees tore down the black paper in the store windows and everyone was screaming with craziness. There were 4-foot working models of the iPhone in the store windows displaying the numeric count down. And everyone started counting down together. People were chanting, “iPhone, iPhone.” And when the count reached zero, everyone was screaming like crazy. They opened the doors right away.

Making extra money

People with money have started showing up. A Newport business guy in a black suit came up and said “I’ll give you $200 to buy me an iPhone.” This guy is money.

No, not me. My second phone is for my mom. But another guy in line who just stopped by last night to keep his friend company decided to stay and make some money off it. He’s number 14 in line. He’s going to buy two phones and make money, $200 on one and $100 on the other.

That’s the way to do it if you’ve got money. If you don’t, you do it how I’m doing it. -Sonya
