iPhone fever hits OC and one reporter in particular…

June 28th, 2007, 2:19 pm · 4 Comments · posted by

You won’t catch me standing in line all day waiting to spend $600 on an Apple iPhone (Now if it were half the price with no contract….)

iphonesonya160.jpgSonya Smith, who covers Irvine and the Great Park for the Register, volunteered for reporting duties of all things iPhone. Well, she was going to stand in line all day and night anyway. But I’ll take any extra help I can get!

This girl is crazy for Apple. She admitted to holding off on paying for her car?s regular maintenance just to have money for this pricey new phone. At least she’s already an AT&T customer. Sonya will be updating this blog periodically from now until she gets her hands on one of these phones, which will go on sale at Apple and AT&T stores at 6 p.m. Friday.

But let me let her tell you why she’s a Mac addict:

Well here I am, dressed in a tank top and jean shorts preparing to wait outside in line for more than 24 hours for a cell phone. I guess I should begin by telling you why I?m a Mac addict:

First, I own quite a collection of Apple products ? Powerbook 15-inch G4 laptop, 20-inch iMac desktop, first generation iPod (still works like a charm), U2 iPod (the first, black and white model), video iPod and an orange shuffle (the clip kind).

Second, I name my Apple products. Yes I know that?s lame. But even more lame are the names (based on being a reporter and sharing common interest with the Superman series) my desktop is Superman and my laptop is Lois Lane. And, in case you?re wondering, yes I?ve already named my iPhone. It?ll be Jimmy ? Superman and Lois? photographing sidekick.

Third, I?ve made quite a commitment already to getting an iPhone. Making starting reporter salary means I?ve saved up over the last six months, I?ve sold off my HP iPaq 656 PDA/cell phone and its accessories, AND?.I?m putting off regular car maintenance and paying to get my wisdom teeth removed just so I can pay for Apple?s next wonder.
Oh and did I tell you that I freaked out when I was eating breakfast one day at a Corner Bakery and I saw the Apple guy there! (He?s the guy who was in the movie Dodgeball, but who is probably better known as the humanistic parody of an Apple computer in TV commercials).

Sure I’m not the first person waiting in line, or the biggest Apple fan, but I am (from what I know) the first reporter to be waiting in line. So, with that, I’m off with my car loaded with supplies (see list below) and instead of announcing to my Irvine newsroom counterparts how many days it is until the iPhone comes out?..it is now just over a day away!

Wish me luck. I?ll be the one in line at the Irvine Spectrum wearing black glasses with red metal sides. Stay tuned to hear how I?m doing with the heat (and cold tonight), what it?s like sitting and sleeping on hard concrete, and ? most importantly ? if I?ll be the lucky buyer of an iPhone tomorrow at 6 p.m.!

What I’m bringing:
Sleeping bag, pillow and sleeping pad.
My laptop, Lois.
Photo camera.
Snacks (sodas, water, vegan jerky, pistachios).
Change of clothes.
Books (Mark Twain writings, book on Frank Lloyd Wright).
Press stuff (press pass, notebooks, pens).
Sunglasses, etc.

    Absolutely insane.

It is just a phone. A very nice phone perhaps, but still a phone. :-)

  • You are not alone. I am the interactive media editor and a visual journalist with BostonNOW. and I will be blogging and vlogging live in line here on the east coast. I don’t have to start quite so early Because the city of Boston is clearing the sidewalks of campers.

I camped out in front of Target in Fullerton to get my hands on the Nintendo Wii. It was actually fun talking with the other campers.

It’s bad enough on the freeways now with people talking on cell phones and trying to text while driving and playing with a GPS. Now they have another more capable toy to divert their attention just before they kill someone.
