Reporting from the front lines: Register reporter Sonya Smith is #10 in line waiting to buy an iPhone at the Irvine Spectrum Apple store. She’s been there since Thursday afternoon and is offering periodic updates of what it’s like to wait for the iPhone, which goes on sale today at 6 p.m.
“Sleeping on the ground is not all its cracked up to be…
Here’s a photo of me sleeping taken my by darling boyfriend, Grant, who stayed the night to watch me as I slept.
Just woke up via Irvine Spectrum security. A bright 6 a.m. wake up and reminder to start moving our sleeping bags, chairs and one person?s portable, inflatable mattress out of the way of building openings.
The officers were pretty cool about it, but it was 6 a.m.
And if you’ve ever been to the Spectrum you may have noticed the background music played through speakers hidden behind planters.
But…..when you’re sleeping next to one of those planters (or largely not sleeping) the music can get old. Music ranges from some good, recent music – to tacky 80s and 90s songs. As an example, we just listened to Billy Joel’s “Honesty is such a lonely word” and now we are treated to the song “I’d like to get to know you” by some band from either the 60s or 70s.
But just a showing into how crazy I am for the iPhone, waking up at 6 a.m. on bricks over concrete with an aching back was OK when one of my line mates reminded us that the iPhone is now less than 12 hours away. -Sonya

Wake up and smell the coffee, girl! Good job. What you are doing is sorta like running an ultra-marathon. Hydrate, and you’ll be fine!
Why? Makes a nice story but you will be stuck with AT&T (or whatever they are naming themselves these days.) “Dropped” them long ago because of crappy service and coverage.
Apple could have been dominant years ago, and now they are repeating the same exact mistake – a closed system. Your own story reports using the outdated data network when there’s no WiFi. Now that truly is an app killer if I ever heard one.
Maybe if iPhones (or ANY cell phone for that matter) worked as well as a land line, I MIGHT get excited. Until then, yawn….
Who stands in line for a phone? Yep, wake up but you are not smelling coffee…more like stupidity.
I am totally ashamed of the human race. Spending days and hours for a phone. This world SHOULD come to an end … and soon! This is so pathetic.
