Over the weekend at the bustling Comic Con in San Diego, fans of Yu-Gi-Oh card and video games competed for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game World Championships. And local kid from Buena Park came in third. Congratulations!
Adam, apparently, is a 16-year-old whiz at the card games, which are made by Upper Deck Entertainment in Carlsbad. Prior to the World Champs, Adam played his way to “Best Yu-Gi-Oh! player in the country.” In the Yu-Gi-Oh video game competition, 21-year-old Manuel Lopez from San Juan Capistrano was a runner up. Each were awarded a Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship trophy, autographed drawings and an exclusive Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG card.
Register reporter Eric Carpenter is working on a story about young Adam, so check the paper a week from tomorrow for the story.
The cartoon actually started as a comic book, or Manga, as they like to call it in Japan. Created by Kazuki Takahashi, Yu-Gi-Oh! debuted in 1996 in Japan and eventually expanded overseas to become a hit series on the Cartoon Network.
Says UpperDeck, the card game has sold 15.8 billion cards worldwide. Dude! I’m completely out of the Yu-Gi-Oh! loop so it’s news to me that over 800,000 registered “Duelists” play in weekly tournaments in local stores nationwide.
