If you were in New York City last month, you may have caught a glimpse at some strange-looking employees at the Times Square Toys ‘r Us.

The life-size Tamagotchi characters, inspired by the virtual-pet toys from Bandai America in Cypress, were part of a publicity campaign to promote the virtual world of the Tamagotchi. The latest pets can choose a career and then play in TamaTown.com.

Mametchi, Memetchi and Kuchipatchi roamed the streets of New York hoping to get a job. Apparently, Mametchi (pictured) got hired by a local salon. Looks like the yellow Tamagotchi could use some tips on where to point that dryer.

The promotion heads to Orange County this weekend. The Tamagotchi characters will be at the Irvine Spectrum on Sunday, after a stop at the Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade on Friday and Santa Monica Pier on Saturday. Details at tamasummergigs.com.
