AT&T eases up on wireless-phone contractsThis is a good bit of news: AT&T is tweaking two parts of its customer contract to make the commitment a bit more consumer friendly in this day and age where no one wants to keep the same cell phone for two years.

1. Beginning in November, AT&T customers can switch to a new wireless calling plan without having to extend their contract.

2. The company is also switching to a pro-rated, early-termination fee. No more $200 flat charge if you’ve decided to end your contract before two years. Beginning “early in 2008,” this policy will affect new and renewing customers who sign one-to-two year agreements. Details on how the rate will be prorated are “forthcoming,” promises AT&T.

Says Paul Roth, AT&T’s president of Sales and Marketing for the company’s wireless unit:

AT&T leads the wireless industry in the flexibility, friendliness and fairness of its practices, and the new policies we have announced today are the most recent examples of that leadership.”

I guess AT&T forgot that Verizon launched a pro-rated, early termination fee plan last fall.
