G-Technology announced today the first 1-terabyte portable hard drive. Click on the image at right for a slide show of hard drive images — all are of 1-terabyte version.

The company is based in Santa Monica, but was acquired today by Fabrik in Irvine.

The all-aluminum drive (available in a 1-terabyte or a 500-gigabyte version) is designed as a tool for people needing large amounts of memory on-the-go, for example editing movies while away from a desk. The “G-RAID mini” drive includes a can be used with a FireWire 800, FireWire 400 or USB 2.0 connection. It is ready out-of-the-box to work with Apple computers, as well as Windows machines.

Suggested retail pricing has not yet been announced, but both models will come with a three-year factory warranty and will be available in March. The drive charges when connected to a FireWire port, eliminating the need for a separate AC power supply cable. The drive supports simultaneous playback of multiple layers of video in Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere and Avid Xpress Pro.
