AT&T is now offering free Wi-Fi at 17,000 locations, which includes hot spots like Starbucks and McDonald’s.
Big catch: this is only for its LaptopConnect customers. That is, you’re already paying $59.99 a month so your laptop can get Internet service via AT&T’s cellular service.
While you may be thinking, ‘Why would I use Wi-Fi when I’m already paying for my own mobile Internet service?”
The answer is speed. AT&T’s LaptopConnect service offers speeds of 600 kbps to 1,400 kbps. Wi-Fi Internet is usually 1,500 kbps or higher, depending on how many users and a few other technical issues.
I also point this out for everyone who has a LaptopConnect card from their employer. Free Wi-Fi — it’s nice to know it’s available.
