Geeks and news junkies alike have been checking out the newest search engine, ‘Cuil‘ (pronounced ‘cool’). The site, brought to us by a former Google architect and her husband, has been quite buggy all morning.
I, of course, searched for ‘Gadgetress,’ first and pulled up no results. But on a second try, it pulled up 2,757 results. Then I heard from Register real-estate blogger Jon Lansner, who had typed in ‘Orange County.’ No results.
Curiously, I tried a few more terms: ‘Orange County Register‘ (zero), OCRegister (zilch) and newspapers (nada). And not even the word, etc! What does this mean? (The site had other issues with its own stuff, such as its ‘About Us’ page.)
While Cuil offered no results the first time I typed these words in, the second attempt did pull up results (usually).

More on Cuil:
Maybe they know something you don’t
I tried various searches, too, and wasn’t impressed. Some of the links were old and outdated and others just didn’t fit the search very well. In some instances, there were no results when I knew there should be.
I’ll stick with Google.
there is no harm if OC Register is not included in CUIL search
most of the articles in OCR are junk and the reporters are sticking to OCR, as they cannot get any other jobs
They weren’t searching in India, that’s why!
the network is overloaded
I just typed OC Register and it came up first time. Then I tried OC Register and it came up. No Problems.
They’re having huge load issues this morning - all sorts of people are getting weird errors. I’m much more disappointed with the “good” searches i got, though - no where near the relevancy of Google or Yahoo on any of a dozen searches I did.
I found it. Just type in the word “rag”
Try live.com for search. Its much better than Google or Yahoo.
I am seriously dissapointed with the searches I did.
I have never seen so many spam websites listed as a search result in Google, but that is probably because Google does not list them as the top results but buries them under more relevant content.
That is the tip of the iceberg. We have been having fun with this all day, and it is a major letdown.
The developers should have followed the business plans of their former employeer, and released this as a beta for the next three years until the bugs are worked out…
“Apu”, please comment intelligently, it is helpful if you understand the concepts and the content contained in an article before you touch hand to keyboard to respond…
Not so “cuil”…
We’ll be back soon…
Due to overwhelming interest, our Cuil servers are running a bit hot right now. The search engine is momentarily unavailable as we add more capacity.
Thanks for your patience.

Sorry, an error occurred.
Please try your search again. If the problem persists, please be assured that our team is working quickly to resolve the issue.
I just accessed the site again this afternoon. Typed “The Orange County Register” and came up with eleven results. No problems….I like the new search engine. Google has too many ads!
I went there last night. Typed in my job description and nothing. Clicked on the “about us” page and it was blank. Overall I would say my experience… on a scale of poor to magnificent… I would rate as a nothing.
I just hope there’s another story about it a year or so to remind me to try again.
…Always the last to find out, are you not?
