Piper Palin combing brother Trig’s hairWhatever your political leanings, who isn’t thinking about how cute Piper Palin is following her mother’s acceptance speech for the Republican vice president nomination?

The unexpected shot of the Sarah Palin’s youngest daughter innocently licking her hand to comb her baby brother’s hair brought laughter and all sorts of positive comments throughout the Twitterverse (my favorites are this one, this one and this one.). She also made it to the top 30 list of Google’s hot trends that people were searching for tonight.

And of course, within hours of young Piper’s spit combing baby Trig’s hair, there were 11 videos (as of midnight) on YouTube commemorating the moment.

Maybe it’s the tech background of me and my husband but we noticed immediately that 10 of the 11 were captured by someone videotaping their TV! Shaky video and all! Here’s a good example, where you can even see the glare of the TV screen:

UPDATE: 9/11/08 = Whoops video has been taken down. Here’s a link to another one.

I guess YouTube users aren’t as techie as I thought. My husband’s theory is that YouTube may search video uploads for any sign of copyright material like some sort of data buried in the broadcast to flag copyright material and thwart piracy.

Or it could be just easier to stand in front of your TV, hit rewind on the TiVo and turn on the camcorder. Then after the speech, transfer the video to PC and upload to YouTube. Um, yeah.

    Too cute.

I am an official content partner with YouTube which means I have access to certain backend copyright discovery technology that most of the public doesn’t see. YouTube does in fact use video and audio algorithms to identify copyrighted material – however it is powerful enough to work accurately even when a video camera is simply taping a television screen. And it only works if the content owner (so in this case, the broadcaster) has uploaded the material so the system can match new videos against something.

I doubt that was in play for something that happened so recently, so most likely your second assumption was right, it’s just easier to tape record the tv screen.
