YouTube does in fact use video and audio algorithms to identify copyrighted material - however it is powerful enough to work accurately even when a video camera is simply taping a television screen. And it only works if the content owner (so in this case, the broadcaster) has uploaded the material so the system can match new videos against something. I doubt that was in play for something that happened so recently, so most likely your second assumption was right, it's just easier to tape record the tv screen.
