Google Phone launches for $179, photos!

The T-Mobile G1, or the first phone with Google’s Android mobile operating software, was officially announced today.

Features:

  • HTC phone with QWERTY keyboard that slides out from underneath display
  • 3.2-inch touch-screen display
  • Wi-Fi
  • Full HTML web browser
  • 3G Internet, of course, so you can, for example, do one-click ordering at Amazon. That’s up to 1 Mbps download speeds
  • Google Talk built-in to address book
  • One-click on keyboard to get to Google search
  • Access to a ton of applications in the Google Android Marketplace
  • 3.2-megapixel camera!
  • microSD card slot

Pricing:

  • $179 from T-Mobile
  • Data plans are $25 (for unlimited data use and 400 text messages), $35 (unlimited data and messaging). Both require a voice plan. 3G Internet service is currently available in 16 markets now, 22 by the G1’s launch date and 27 market by the end of the year, which covers 80 percent of T-Mobile’s customers.
  • 2-year committment required.
  • Available Oct. 22, but T-Mobile customers can order it today and get it delivered to them. Select T-Mobile markets will sell at the stores. In Europe, the phone will be available in limited areas in early November, and the first quarter of 2009 for the everyone.

  • Can’t be tethered as a computer modem.
  • Won’t work with DRM-music from iTunes
  • No Skype application yet.
  • Will work on any GSM/UMTS network in the world.
  • The sim card will be locked to T-Mobile

    Whats up with the data plan along with text messaging being 35 dollars? They should be cheaper that ATT.

    Actually, T-Mobile’s data plan comes out cheaper because it is unlimited data/text for $35. AT&T’s $30/month iPhone plan doesn’t include unlimited texting, which costs an additional $20/month.

    Looks like Google phone users may be able to avoid texting fees with Google Talk and other IM services. — Gadgetress

    the iPhone is a much better phone. You can make the keyboard bigger by flipping it and it has a much bigger screen.in matter of fact I’m using my iPhone to type right now,it’s freakin awesome
    For not much more expensive u should get the iPhone
