AT&T TV coming to Circuit City and Wal-Mart

AT&T U-verseIf cell phones and satellite TV can do it, AT&T is wondering why not Internet-based TV? AT&T’s U-Verse TV service will be available later this month at Circuit City and Wal-Mart stores – 600 locations nationwide.

But just because you can sign up for AT&T’s TV service at your neighborhood Wal-Mart, that doesn’t mean you can get it. The in-store kiosks are there to let consumers 1) know that U-Verse exists, 2) ask more about it and 3) place an order.  The kiosks will be staffed by trained Circuit City and Wal-Mart employees.

Internet-based TV service from the telephone companies is being rolled out across the country, but, it seems, oh so slowly. AT&T and Verizon both launched TV service in Orange County last year but many parts of the county can’t get the service. AT&T’s U-Verse has been spreading much faster than Verizon’s FiOS (see “ FiOS at a standstill in OC“).

In Orange County, AT&T’s U-Verse TV service is still not everywhere, according to AT&T.

As of Oct. 1, U-Verse TV is available in these cities (or parts thereof): Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Irvine, La Habra, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Orange, Placentia, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Ana, Stanton, Tustin, Villa Park, Westminster and Yorba Linda.

U-Verse kiosk sales will only occur in stores in Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Wisconsin. Future locations will be announced later.

Currently, AT&T is offering a $100 cash to anyone who signs up at a Circuit City or Wal-Mart. The offer ends Jan. 31, 2009.
