Question: I have recently purchased a Dell 630i desktop with XP Professional Operating System. My previous system was a Dell Dimension 4550 desktop with XP Home. WordPerfect Office 12 is the word processing program I use.
My problem is that when I import jpg images into WordPerfect graphics boxes on the new computer only one half the image is visible, while the other is black. I had no such problem with my previous system. Can you tell me how to correct this problem? I would really appreciate your advice or input. I have enjoyed reading your column and have gotten many a great nugget of advice from you. Thank you for any help you can give. ~ Bob Redman “Robert Redman”
PC Club: Although you say you are trying to import jpg images, I suspect that in fact you are trying to ‘Copy and Paste’ a jpg image that is too large into your document.
An 8-megapixel camera generates an image that is 3264 x 2448 pixels and at the default resolution of 72 DPI, WordPerfect thinks it is 45 inches wide. WordPerfect allows up to 27-inches.
You’ll need to resize the photo using separate software. Good thing there are a number of graphics programs to resize and save the image first, you can still use this procedure. A free program, such as Irfanview can do that easily. Resizing the image to 1024 x 768 pixels at 300 DPI will work. (Gadgetress wants to point out another simple program is Picnik, also free, at picnik.com.)
A better solution is to resize the image to 300 DPI first. This should make the image less than the 27 inch maximum that Wordperfect allows. Then go to the Menu Bar, click on Insert, Graphic, From file. When the Insert Image window opens, pick the image file that you have resized.
Wordperfect will convert the image to its own format that allows you to keep the full resolution of the image in your document. It will place a small image in your document that you can easily apply all of WordPerfect’s Image Edit features to, which include position, apply text wrap selections, caption, resize etc.

WordPerfect has fixed the “image greater than 27 inches” problem in WordPerfect X4, which launched early in 2008. It’s no longer necessary to resize the images, or to convert them to BMP format, which worked better, before inserting the image into a document.
I am having the same issue with imported graphics being half blacked out after import in WP 12. The file I am importing was originally a WP12 document converted to a pdf and then saved as a jpg to import as a graphic back into a WP12 document using Insert>Graphics>From File…
The file is only 236 kb, and no larger than a letter-size page. The original document basically consists of a table and a small logo graphic.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
