For residents waiting for an alternative to cable TV, Verizon’s FiOS TV service will soon be offered in Seal Beach, according to a FiOS spokesperson I met with this morning.
April Dornidon, with FiOS, says Seal Beach residents will start getting the fiber-optic TV and Internet service in early 2009. Construction begins in the next few weeks and will start on the north side of Pacific Coast Highway and work its way into downtown, she said.
By the end of the first quarter 2009, Verizon expects 5,000 homes in Seal Beach will be able to order FiOS services.
FiOS (sounds like high-oh’s) has had a slow rollout in Orange County. It launched in March 2007 in parts of Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Westminster, Stanton and a few unincorporated parts of Orange County. Since then, Verizon has only expanded service to more residents in those cities. Still today, not every resident in those cities can get the service.
“Our main focus has been filling in the gaps here in Orange County,” Dornidon said.
Future O.C. locations have not been finalized — but I’m constantly hounding FiOS to fill me in!
Verizon has also been working with condo associations, apartments and landlords to offer the service in multi-unit dwellings. Read “Verizon FiOS TV heavily targeting apartments, condos in O.C. and more.”
For details on whether you can get the service, FiOS’ site at www.verizon.com/fiostv.
By the way, Verizon promises to answer questions from readers. If you have one, post it below as a comment or send me an e-mail.

Verizon is shooting themselves in the foot by offering services they are unable to deliver. I have received FIOS alerts from Verizon indicating that FIOS service was available in Seal Beach i.e. College Park East. Had my hopes cruelly dashed by unsympathetic customer service representatives who could not explain why I received said alerts when in fact FIOS is so far not available in Seal Beach. I have had 3 mb/sec Verizon DSL for 3 year and cannot complain about the service and or price. However, would definitely jump to an equivalent service if offered before FIOS becomes available. Why should we the customer suffer the self serving motives and timetables of a very large telecommunications company? The equation seems ideal and very clear, verizon offers a service which many patrons desire i.e. FIOS, yet are so caught up in recuperating their installation costs by squeezing the last ounce of advantage before maybe or maybe not providing access in piece meal fashion. They have a very good product, but will alienate and lose many positively predisposed customers by their deceptive and misleading publicity announcements of availability of service in determined areas. Why should we have to take the burden of their installation costs? I am sure there are many firms that are willing and able to provide a superior product without extracting the very last bit of economic leverage. I am at the point now, that although I have been a Verizon customer for many years will go for an alternative service that can deliver on its promises.
I second Kevin’s question…I too am in the FiOS black hole.
When is FIOS coming to Lake Forest? I have been waiting for a long time.
Still waiting on FIOS in northern Fountain Valley…
Has Verizon been successful in negotiating with Fountain Valley to provide FIOS to the rest of FV? Does Verizon even plan on providing FIOS to the rest of the city?
