Cox bumps up Internet speed for ‘premier’ users in O.C.

It may not be FiOS fast, but O.C. customers of Cox Communications’ fastest Internet service got a huge speed boost overnight to 20 Mbps, up from 15 Mbps.

It’s a free upgrade for “Premier” customers who are already paying $59.99 per month for Internet  service. And it should happen automatically - no phone call or technician required. Cox Business Home Office Premier customers are also getting the upgrade.

In addition, Cox’s “PowerBoost,” which uses underutilized Internet to offer a temporary speed burst when you need it (to download movies, for example), jumps to 25 Mbps.

This makes Cox the second fastest Internet provider in Orange County. Time Warner Cable’s speeds top out at 10 Mbps. AT&T U-Verse offers up to 18 Mbps.  Verizon’s FiOS, which is not available to most of Cox’s users, is still O.C.’s leader at 50 Mbps.

For all other Cox Internet users, the second fastest package is still pretty good and costs $15 less. (Although, Cox tells me that with qualifying bundled service, the top speed can be had for up to $25 less). Cox’s “Preferred” plan is $44.99 per month with speeds up to 9 Mbps, with bursts up to 12 Mbps.

I called Cox to downgrade my internet service from Premium to the next lower service ($44.95) and they offered me the Premium service for $49.99 for 6 months. The rep also gave me his name and extension and told me to call him at the end of the 6 months and he would extend the offer at that time.

By all accounts, this is still extremely expensive for internet service. Not to mention that this power boost really is only an advantage to online gamers - The average user will see little to no benefit –That is a fact!
The problem being that if you on a Cox package (cable+internet+phone) and want to downgrade one of the services to save money, they tell you it will end up costing you more because all services will be pieced out rather than bundled.
The cities need to redo their contracts with Cox so the residents can pick and choose what they want and still save money. Maybe you want the top cable package, but only need mid-level internet service for example.

I just called Cox and asked about this. I have HSI (High Speed Internet) with powerboost and they verified I get 15Mbps with a boost up to 20Mbps.

So either this article is wrong, or the tech doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

ketchup201 - Are you a premier user? If so, according to Cox’s site, you should be getting 20 Mbps with 25 Mbps boost. See for yourself: cox.com/ocpv/highspeedinternet/pricing.asp
