Verizon improves cell coverage in 3 O.C. cities

December 19th, 2008, 3:22 pm · 4 Comments · posted by

Verizon Wireless said Friday that it added 13 more 3G cell sites in Los Angeles and Orange County.

In Orange County, the new sites are in Huntington Beach, Los Alamitos and Garden Grove.

In Huntington Beach, the tower is along Edwards Street to Slater and west to Graham Street, offering improved coverage along Ellis Avenue and up to Gothard Street.

In Los Alamitos, the tower is near the intersection of Seal Beach Boulevard and Katella Avenue.

In Garden Grove, there is added coverage along Chapman Avenue, portions of Los Alamitos Naval Air Station and in surrounding neighborhoods.

Verizon also added new cell sites outside of O.C. in  Downey, Simi valley, Baldwin Park, Ramona, Twentynine Palms, Colton and Brawley.

This is part of the company’s $4.6 billion investment in California since 2000. The new towers should improve Verizon’s fast 3G Internet service in those neighborhoods.

Verizon is to be applauded for 13 more cell sites to improve 3G coverage. But their statement about a $4.6 billion investment in California since 2000 is questionable, particularly if it is both wireless and wireline. Verizon’s capitalization for FiOS TV is about $25 billion across selected markets in 14 states over five years. And through the third quarter, Verizon has spent about $5 Billion to pass 12 million premises and acquire 2.2 million Internet users and 1.6 million TV users. In comparison, has Verizon made significant investment in California at $4.6 billion over eight years and a large population and geography. Is Verizon using the high margins of wireless billing in California to fund fiber expansion in other less competitive markets?

  • Verizon still has a long ways to go. Lots of cell coverage complaints for Verizon Wireless in Southern California on the http://www.deadcellzones.com map.

I’m wondering if this is a DAS deployment because I’m starting to see them on utility poles around HB similat to the install on Graham between Edinger and Heil. I guess VZW can tap fiber resources from the landline division to install their on DAS nodes. Very cool to see this showing up in the residential areas. Please keep going and hurry up with your planned site in Portola Hills at Saddleback and Glenn Ranch!

I would love to see that in all types of neighborhoods, especially out in the chino hills/909 area because the service could definitely use some improvement out that way
