Four weeks after Time Warner Cable customers experienced a massive Internet outage, I still hear about service issues but complaints are down to a trickle. The latest came in over the weekend.
Related to last month’s outage or not, I’ll continue to check in with company officials weekly until service improves and I can report just that. Here is today’s status report:
“Following up with you, there have been no outages to report,” confirms Darryl Ryan, Time Warner Cable’s director of media relations.
The most recent complaints I received were about Internet outages. It sounds like many folks are still experiencing Domain Name System (DNS) issues, which was blamed during the original outage. One fix: Use an alternative DNS service, like OpenDNS.com.
And even though Time Warner’s Southern California operation no longer uses its own online status site to help consumers figure out if there are area outages, the page still works. This is not an officially sanctioned Time Warner interpretation but a quick scan shows several “red” areas in Time Warner regions in Los Angeles for days later this week. The explanation for January 8, 2009 (view screen shot of outages):

Road Runner is currently experiencing issues with the cable network. Subscribers in the affected area(s) may experience a loss of connectivity, usually indicated by flashing modem lights and/or a loss of video service. Our engineers are working quickly to resolve this issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

If Time Warner customers have any Internet, telephone or video outages, please call the company’s customer support line to get help. The number is 1-888-TWCABLE (888-892-2253).
Time Warner officials are reading the comments, and even commenting from time to time. So help me keep track — good and bad — and e-mail me or comment below so I can track when service returns to normal.
Earlier:
I live in redondo beach socal and I have had no Internet service for the whole day I don’t think he was telling the truth
Timw Warner is the worst Internet Company that there is.
The only reason that I have Time Warner is:
There in no other Service available in my area!
I would probably be better off if I quit them and started using the Library. NA, they probably have Time Warner also
My internet is always good because I use Verizon Fios……….I never liked Time Warner or trusted them. thier customer service is worst than AOL………
Still experienced outage in Diamond Bar. I noticed the outage as early as 12/31/08. Reported the problem to Time Warner several times. The problem is intermittent with more than 70% downtime. The other 30% uptime, I experience very slow upload (range between 4 kbps to 300 kbps), most of the time it on the low end. A few of my neighbor also running into same problem as I do. Can’t wait for Verizon FiOS to the rescue.
So after the Modem was swapped out on Saturday, it worked for about an hour. After that time the internet and phone has been terrible, you can hear the party calling you, however they can’t hear you.
I got the amazing run around until a Supervisor Jerome ” I won’t give my last name” said there was a ticket open and it will be fixed in an hour. I asked for his contact information to call back but he said to call the Time Warner customer care and ask for Jerome (JJG) and they will get him. Because he doesn’t give out his last name. When I asked for a manager to call me back he gave me John Fischer, Carmella Elenore(couldn’t spell it), and Tony Becerra names with no issues, but I would have to wait for a call back. I guess they are not as important as Jerome (JJG).
Don’t worry everything will be fixed in 1 - 1 1/2 hour…… The question becomes how long until it goes down again.
Yeah I live and DB as well and experienced internet problems the other day! At first I was about to call my mom to ask if the bill was paid but that wasn’t it. It kept going on and off. Freezing up in the middle of typing ect. Time warner is going to regret their actions when the go bankrupt!
I hate Time Warner Cable! I called when the Internet was out and customer service said they couldnt credit my account because it was a wide ranged issue! So im paying for service that I cant use? How is that fair! My internet seems to go out between 12 a.m.-3 a.m….. Why is that I asked? They say its not them, that its my computer causing the problem! Hello!!! I work on computers for a living! Not true!!! I reboot, i ping… all the above and nothing! I would love to get att or verizon, but where i live its not available!!! PLEASE HELP!
im in Fullerton, I’ve been doing good for the last 2 weeks or so..
Totally Worthless Crap!
They keep things broken so they can pay their corupt CEO hundreds of millions!
I dont know whats worse them or A Del Pee On Ya!
On 1/6/09, there at least 3 Internet outages in Diamond area. Notice the intermittent drop started at around 5:30 to around 8 am the next day. Spoke to level 3 again. They believe the problem with one of node got damaged by water.
I never did get my call back from the notorious Jerome (jig). However my Internet and phone has not worked since yesterday morning… I will call again and waste my life on hold with Time Weiner. Open DNS is not an option since the cable modem is not even connecting to the network.
My connection has been up for over 24 hrs for the first time since new year. Knock on wood
Just switched over to Verizon FIOS on Friday, January 9th for hd tv, phone and internet. Been with TW forever, was one of the first to get Road Runner, but finally decided enough was enough. Internet would shut off on a daily basis, HD signal was pixalated and would freeze. When you call TW they put you through the same stuff every time but they never fix the problem. I think the problems are arising from to many subscribers and to many High Def TV’s. I am very happy with Verizon so far. Price is cheaper, but that is not why I changed. I just want reliable service for the top dollar I am willing to pay.
I live in Redondo Beach and over the last 4 weeks have not had service all day each week on Monday’s and Tuesday’s. I work from home but telecommute to Indianapolis, Indiana and Norfolk, Virginia. There were no warnings and I was doing scheduled maintenance on one server and it reamained down for 9 hours potentially costing tens of thousands of lost revenue to my client. I called each day because I had to let my management know status and the were never truthful about the situation!
I live in Walnut bordering Diamond Bar and Rowland Heights. I started having problems on Jan 9th. While holding my breath for it to resolve itself, I had no choice but to contact them on Jan 14th. Since then I’ve been in daily contact going over the same troubleshooting routines. I’d say that up time is around 60/40 for me. However, that 40% downtime is when need it the most. What bothers me is that they spent a lot of time with me trying to make it look like it was a problem on my home network. Wil be looking at an alternative solution on Monday Jan 19th. “Verizon Fios?”
I hope this information helps out with anyone else having problems in this area.
I live in Anaheim, and have had intermitent internet & Outlook Express problems for a few months. I finally started keeping a log recently, and so far have had problems 8 days this month.
I live in Redondo BEach and I am STILL having issues. I agree with the other poster - why should I be paying for a service I cannot use. I will be working more and more from home and I need reliable service and so will be calling Verizon Fios - enough is enough.
I am also in Redondo Beach. Service usually sucks but today there is no connection whatsoever. All lights on my modem are on at the same time and even after troubleshooting (i.e. disconnecting and reconnecting) nothing changes.
The Customer Service rep I spoke with wanted to schedule a crew to come to my house…..nothing has changed at my house and I requested she check to see if it is area wide and low and behold she agreed that scheduling a crew to come to my house is probably pointless because it is an area wide outage.
COME ON TWC GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER
I’m in Dallas county in Texas. My TWC has been down all day. I call them and they say we dont have an ETA to get it fixed. I hope it’s not like last time. My service went down 20 + times a day for 3 weeks. They sent a tech guy out to my house and he told me that my problem wasn’t a priority and left.
Wow Julie. If your problem wasn’t a priority, I wonder what was? I’d keep at it with customer service. Good luck.
Something up (well, down) with TW in socal again today (2/19). The toll-free number robot acknowledges that they are experiencing a “service interruption” in my area. The network status page (thanks for that!) has some cryptic stuff starting at 10:19a (PST) today - “INGLEWOOD NODE AJ052 -IGWDCA2-ARS1-CABLE 2/1 UPSTREAM 6.0″, then, @ 10:54, “LOS ANGELES AI 399 BWLACA1-ARS9 9/1 6″.
That’s about when the phone, TV and network all went down in Studio City…
FYI: Time Warner’s PR guys seem to be listening and trying to help. If you have no success with customer service (that’s 888-TWCABLE), they offer their own contact info: Darryl Ryan, director of media relations at darryl.ryan@twcable.com and Jeff Simmermon, Director of Digital Communications at jeff.simmermon@twcable.com.
I’m having issues w/ TWC again. Palmdale, CA. I’m a former Adelphia Cable customer and though the connection wasn’t as fast as the new turbo connection from Time Warner it was significantly more reliable, and customer support didn’t run you around in circles when you called. If there was an area outage they let you know about it rather than making you jump through hoops just to confirm what they should already know. That the issue is on there end. I’m a Microsoft Certified System Engineer. I work from my home and am a full time web developer by trade, so having the internet going down on such a regular basis is a no for work. If it weren’t for my blackberry as backup sometimes I’d probably have a regular table at the Starbucks or Coffee Bean. And to top it off Time Warner makes you call in for each instance of an issue, waste in excess of 1 hour on the phone with a level one tech support agent that doesn’t understand what a ping or trace route is he’s just following a script and then when you’ve completely perplexed him you move onto the next 2 levels of Customer Support escalation hell. And to top it all off they’re surprised that your not satisfied when they offer to reimburse you for 1 day of service outage at a $1.50 or so. They never seem to understand the importance of running a business from home. I’ve even gone as far to ask if I can sign up for a premier plan (beyond the turbo) if available just to purchase some reliability and of course that option isn’t available to me. But what’s available and served up in great big servings is horrible customer support, and a complete lack of understanding to the necessity of a consistently reliable connection to the net to run my business.
If anyone from TWC or OC Register would like to discuss the experiences I’ve had with TWC directly feel free to email me at Robert.bowman(at)gmail.com
It is Feb 25 and I have not had internet service for the past 4 hours. The reason why I am posting now is because I am using OpenDNS. If TWC would just own the fact that their DNS servers aren’t working and send a message out that would be a bone at least. For the past week our service has been slouchy at least. Just to make things even worse, all of our neighbors also can’t got online. UGH so frustrating!
Been having problems every night for the past week or so (In Tustin). Always from about 7:30 pm on. I’m a freelance web designer…anytime my cable is out, I’m losing money!
I’ll be moving in a couple of weeks to Lake Forest. I don’t think I’ll be taking TW cable with me…
eMailing from From WInnetka in SFV via AT&T DSL:
It’s 10 PM on Thursday. Time-Warner Technical Support (Broadband Cable-Internet) says their current problems are due to hackers and this has been going on for 5 days. Being unable to identify and block an intruder from access to the T-m network for 5 days must be some kind of Netwrok Security Record. That’s not a good record to hold. I notice they’ve added a new DNS server, but still no dependable connectivity. That’s why I have DSL also. T-W’s network reliability and support are the worst I’ve experienced. Robert’s message above of the 23rd is spot on. Maybe, if enough people switch to Dish, etc., they may get the message. (signed) disgusted in thh SFV
I really am tired of dealing with this company, OUTAGE my foot. If the problem persist my money will go in better companies HANDS. I have had three times were in the middle of work hours my computer hasnt been working, phones down and TV off for hours. JUST GET IT TOGETHER or you will loose the Verizon customers you gained months back.
