40% discounts coming to Circuit City; TVs excluded

January 29th, 2009, 2:35 pm · 12 Comments · posted by

When Circuit City decided to file for bankruptcy, the tech sites scoffed at its closeout sales — or lack thereof. As with many retailers “going out of business,” they tend to raise prices as the countdown begins.

But now, as noted by SoCalTech.com, one of the four liquidators for Circuit City is cutting prices deeper. Great American Group, based in Woodland Hills, said in a statement that it will provide “deeper discounts” of 40 percent on certain items in the store. Big TVs, however, will only be 20 percent. About 25 percent of Circuit City’s $1.7 billion of inventory has been sold.

Of course, discounts should get greater anyway as the closing date nears.

Which brings us to… if you are looking for the best deal on tech products, please shop around. As Consumer Reports recently pointed out, going-out-of-business prices are sometimes higher than regular sale prices. Because it filed bankruptcy, Circuit City no longer has to honor prices from its Sunday ad. That led Consumer Reports to discover that a 50-inch Panasonic plasma TV was discounted $200 and selling for $1,800. But in the ad for the same week, the same TV was supposed to be $1,500. Additionally, Consumer Reports found the same model online for $1,365 with free shipping.

Lots of comparison shopping being done online by tech sites, like HD Guru. Check out the links below to see where the deals really are.

It is a waste of time to visit Circuit City for liquidator sales. You can get anything cheapers on web, Wal-Mart, Costco, Fry, and other Retailers.
Most important of all, you can have a guarantee and support when you need it the most.

Let Circuit City and its Liquidator eating their own products. Good luck.

Give TV to every employees at Circuit City along with their pink slip as a severance package. No wonder Circuit City disappears for good.

We went looking for a number of things at Circuit City and found that the discounted prices were way more expensive than their regular pricing. Apparently, it’s 30-40% off the LIST price, and not the suggested retail.

What a scam! Even when everything is 60% off, I won’t go back. I can get a good deal almost everywhere else.

    I went to Circuit City to get my Canon camera on “Black Friday” 2007. The price they had online was better than the instore price and they ofcourse honored the online price. I am saying this because they may not be a great place to get a good deal on a TV but there were other things there where you can get a great deal on. I am curious as to how long it will take and who will move into the store at Bella Terra. I suspect it won’t take long to refill that location as it is a pretty great spot. Right off the 405 and Beach Blvd. R.I.P. Circuit City. I’ll be in later this week to pick your carcass clean of Blue Rays. : }

I have an open box 19 inch ACER monitor I paid $105.00 a year ago at BEST BUY and Ciruit City to wants $179.99. No wonder why they went Bankrupt. Their marketing is deceptive. Yeh up to 40% off and up to 25% off ALL TV’s. Go into the store and most stuff is still only 10% off until late March. Another Wallstreet/Circuit City Deceptive Practices.

    DON’T GO, IT’S A SCAM.

  • Me says:

I went in the first week to see what the prices were on their tvs to get an idea. I went back when they were “20%” off and they had marked up the prices of the tv’s from the first week like 30% and then took 20% off of that. the prices ended up being hirer than the first week of the sale. That is just messed up.

Circuit city wasn’t as bad as it was made out to be. I don’t understand all this crying of “oh my god” circuit city spanked me with high prices, it’s a scam!!! Any liquidator does the same thing, that’s what a liquidation sale is! Sell at list price and SHOW a discount. It won’t be until later on that things are more “reasonably” priced. Not to mention at this point Circuit city has ZERO control over the prices, so before you go complaining on how “mean” circuit city is for taking away your candy try to get your story straight.

PS: Those of you that are standing up cheering for Best Buy right now might want to reconsider who you are rooting for. After all, once Circuit City is “dead” means less competition & sure to be higher prices.

Things I’ve purchased at Circuit City instead of Best Buy over the last few years because they have been cheaper:

    HP Laptop
    Sony Vaio Laptop
    42″ LCD HD TV
    46″ Plasma HD TV
    Blu-Ray Player
    HP Pavilion Desktop PC
    Microsoft Zune (x2)
    MTX Subwoofers
    Pioneer Head Unit
    Sirius Satellite Radio
    Speakers, & Misc. Computer accesories..

Things I’ve purchased at Best Buy in the last 5 years…

Nothing, because THEY are a scam!

Its not a scam, you just have to be a wise consumer. Its just like car shopping, do you guys really believe the salesman is giving you the best price when he first offers you a price? I went to the store looking for the SONY W300 digicam. Best Buy and Sony have it for around $329 and the chepeast I found online was Dell $285, plus tax&shipping.

The CC sale was 20% of $329.99 which made it $263, sounds like a nice deal to me.

I AM SAD TO SEE CIRCUIT CITY GO. THE PRICES WAS VERY REASONABLE. WE BROUGHT OUR CHILDRENS FIRST HP COMPUTOR FROM CIRCUIT CITY AND 4 TELEVISIONS. BIRTHDAY, GRADUATION, MOTHERS DAY, FATHERS DAYS GIFTS. I KNOW THAT ALL THE PEOPLE COMPLAINTING ABOUT CIRCUIT CITY HAVE PURCHASED SOMETHING FROM THEM . I REMEMBER C.C. COMMERCIAL S IF YOU FIND A CHEAPER PRICE OF ANYTHING IN C. CITY THEY WOULD PAY YOU THE DIFFERENCE. I WILL TRULEY MISS C IRCUIT CITY.

I got a good deal on an SLR camera. 30% off $499, I paid $350 + tax = $373. Online prices are $450-$500. If you don’t call that a good deal, I don’t know what is. Lowest online price is $409 at Newegg + $9 for shipping.

yes, it was a surprise that we got thrown under the bus in january 2009. the company gave the impression all would be fine after the closings in nov/dec 2008. the liquidator was at our store door within an hour after the announcement that we lost the buyer/liquidation courtdate. we held our breath every day hoping not to be sent home early as ‘unnecessary’. the liquidator controls the pricing and inventory, not CC or it’s employees. we do not have codes to change pricing. we worked hard to clean, rearrange, sell and listen to ‘guests’ whine and swear and treat us like crap because they couldn’t get a flea market deal. we did this until the store was an empty shell. the store was shutdown a week early-short of the WARN Act’s 60day guarantee. there is probably a loophole there for Mr. Liquidator. we aren’t able to attend the job fairs held in Richmond because we don’t live in Richmond or in Virginia for that matter. we don’t get any tv’s or inventory ‘gifts’ or bonus or severence. we are every bit as important as the guys getting the bonus millions but we get none of it! we are doing the work. the job market is butt-tight and it will be hard to find another job. unemployment pay is not even close to what we need to live on. But, there it is. we can rant and complain-but it goes nowhere. as my manager used to say “it is what it is. deal with it!“ so shut up all you whiny children.
