AT&T Wireless is going all out with pushing text messaging. It has a dedicated texting site, a video from a “textpert” and even a company-commissioned survey that concludes it’s acceptable to text a loved one on Valentine’s Day.
No surprise here. Texting is a big business and mobile companies are milking every last byte. Messaging even overtook wireless phone calls last year. AT&T, which handled 243 billion text messages last year, charges 20-cents per text and 30-cents per photo if you’re not on one of its monthly texting plans.
But a text instead of a card?
According to the survey of 1,002 mobile phone users who have previously texted in a relationship (ahh … so some bias there), 48 percent consider a Valentine’s Day text either to be just as good or better than getting a card. A picture message bumped up the gratitude to 68 percent.
