This weekend: Time Warner offers 40 movies for 1-cent each

**UPDATE: Feb. 15 ** Read the new post, “Time Warner Cable apologizes for 1-cent movie mess.

**UPDATE, 11 p.m., Feb. 14 ** What a mess! For customers trying to take advantage of Time Warner’s 1-cent customer appreciation movie deal, the deluge of requests has apparently taken out the system. Readers are complaining that they cannot access the movies, plus other promised movies (mostly HD) are now missing!  As of 11 p.m., only “Hamlet 2″ is available in HD.

If you call Time Warner’s customer support line, at 1-888-TWCABLE, a recording says that it is aware of the video-on-demand issues and engineers are working on it. After 30 minutes on hold myself, a polite customer service representative offered me two coupons for free movies in the future and explained that HD movies were removed because they weren’t coming in clearly (?). She didn’t expect issues to be resolved tonight but was told by her supervisor that we should check the lineup at 8 a.m. on Sunday. The missing HD movies should also be added back.

I have asked Time Warner’s local officials for an official response and will post an update as soon as I hear from them.

**UPDATE, 12:30 a.m. Feb. 14** If the “Thank You” category isn’t showing up on Channel 1 within the “Movies” section, just go to the “HDTV movies” or “Movies on Demand Classics,” and the “Thank You” category is available.

Looking for a cheap Valentine’s Day date this weekend? How about dinner and a movie — at home?

Time Warner Cable is offering 40 movies on demand this weekend for 1 penny each during its “1 Cent Love N’ Movies Deal.’  The 40 movies, including a handful in HD, will be available beginning at 12:01 a.m. Saturday morning, Feb. 14. The special sale ends Sunday, the 15th at 11:59 p.m.

Consider it a customer-appreciation weekend for the rough year cable customers experienced. BUT only for customers in the SoCal region, which includes us in Orange County and Los Angeles.

For a list of movies, see the chart below. To order the movies, go to Channel 1, then “Movies,” and then “Thank You 1¢ Movies.”

**UPDATE, 12:30 a.m. Feb. 14** If the “Thank You” category isn’t showing up on Channel 1 within the “Movies” section, just go to the “HDTV movies” or “Movies on Demand Classics,” and the “Thank You” category is available.

They could of been good movies at least!

  • Bandwagoner says:

I can understand why those movies are a penny. A dime novel for a penny, not bad.

  • Kristy says:

This was a nice idea except that the movies keep cutting in and out. I’ve tried watching two and gave up. I don’t know why they bothered!

  • jimmy says:

    I’ve had the same problem…..
    Picture image keeps breaking up!!
Time Warner I will be asking for a refund for my penny, and maybe canceling my cable to go to satellite…..
    Nice job Time Warner!!!
    You Suck!!

  • Gadgetress says:

I was wondering what the impact the promotion would have on Time Warner’s system. I saw a movie right after midnight last night with no issues — but that was standard definition and not a high traffic hour, I’m sure. This will be an interesting test for the company. Please continue to post your experience here so I can keep track. Thanks!

  • VoxRex says:

The Time Warner Valentine’s Special movie line-up selections are not great. But I’m in for Hellboy ll: The Golden Army and all systems are preped & ready to go:

  • joe says:

If you don’t have hdtv then you can’t acees the movies listed in hdtv section. Movies in 1cent catogory suck. All pink panther.

  • joe says:

Selections suck. Majority are pink-panther and if you don’t have HDTV then you cant acess the other selections. Just time warner trying to cheap out.

  • daph bradley says:

I was so disappointed when I saw the list.
    Thanks a lot, TW!!!

  • DAVE says:

You people who complain at a free offer are exactly whats wrong with America. I know sue them that what you idiots are best at. TWC is the best out there compaired to Cox, DTV even Verizon and there free PPV… oh wait there are not offering anything free. Just rent a movie and shut the hell up. Cheap A** Morons.

  • trish says:

Most horrible day trying to watch pixilated movies. Just horrible. I’m canceling my cable and using my Apple TV for now on.

  • bossco says:

Too many technical problems. Nice try TW.

  • brenda says:

Tried to watch one of the 1-cent movies and got a “could not access movie error”… after 25 minutes on hold with TW got a rep who said they basically wouldn’t do crap… what a scam.

  • Mike Hawk says:

Valentines ruined as I got the same error as Brenda, I could not even by a regular price movie.

  • Shamrockmom says:

We also couldn’t watch the 1-cent movie our family ordered–movie went to black once and stalled out /froze twice. Then all we saw was the “cannot access movie right now” screen. Arrgh! Was on hold with TWC customer service for over 30 min, just gave up. Just a tip, TWC–Don’t promise what you can’t deliver!

  • Brian in HB says:

I wouldn’t say the selection was horrible. I found enough movies that I was interested in to want to watch them assuming it was possible to get it to work. I was able to see Burn After Reading before the system fell apart. I looked at the selection this morning and it looked like the HD movies were still gone.

Now to Dave, normally I have the same attitude about not complaining about things that are free. In this case, though, this is Time Warner’s attempt at a PR move to try to get more people buying On Demand movies and they completely dropped the ball. I have had problems with their system in the past and I haven’t used it since. This weekend just pointed out they still aren’t ready for primetime with the video on demand.

  • Reiny says:

Typical for Time Warner. I finally made the move to AT&T Uverse and I love it! Good customer service and no problems with channels.

  • Gadgetress says:

Thanks for the feedback everyone. FYI: Time Warner admits it messed up. See, “Time Warner Cable apologizes for 1-cent movie mess.”.

  • Keith Weber says:

I use TWC for Internet. Their download speed went down to dial-up speed on Saturday. I called them and they claimed it was an area-wide outage. They did not tell me that it was their TV customers bringing the system to a crawl. This is the second time their tech support has betrayed my trust. They are very un-forthcoming about outages. They try to not even talk to their customers by putting a recorded message on the line saying there is trouble in the area and to be patient. They tried to tell me that it was the whole Los Angeles area. I expressed disbelief and demanded they connect me to a test board technician in the local office. They tested my line, confirmed the problem, and told me that it was the whole LA area. Unbelievable. Unfortunately, there are only a few players left in the broadband market. It is too bad there is virtually no competition. Write your congressperson and tell them that you support regulation. If we can’t have competition, they must be regulated.

  • John says:

I have had Time Warner cable since the 80′s. In fact I am bundled with my computer, and telephone as well. My wife wanted to see Mama Mia, so we cracked a bottle of wine, and I turned on Movies on Demand, selected Mama Mia as one of the 1 cent movies offered and we started to watch. After about 40 minutes the movie just froze. Of course I was never able to access it again. In the past few months I have been having increasingly more problems with them. I will likely make a move in a few weeks after I decide to which system/company I want to switch. So I’ll be saying goodbye to Time Warner.

  • norm says:

Just watched Hellboy2 for a penny. Great entertainment. Ordered 4 more to watch for a penny during the next 24hours of rain. Get over it people! I guess my old big picture TV is good for something. I’m glad I don’t have HD with its attendant problems. No break up or digital goofs on Sunday evening. Try not looking a gift horse in the mouth for a change. By the way…my picture in Costa Mesa has been great and when it has not been my service with Time Warner has been superior. Perhaps I’m just luck\y.

  • Stan says:

I’m amazed at what Time Warner gets away with. Several weeks ago I was watching a college football game on a network channel. With at least one more quarter of the game to be played, the channel suddenly switched to a half-hour paid commercial broadcast. Yes, the game was available on a higher channel, but by the time I found out what channel it was on, I missed several key plays. Keep it up, Time Warner. Don’t give a hoot about your viewers.

  • CG says:

We just turned our box in to TW, and are switching to FiOS. We have never been able to watch a VOD movie on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday night because of pixilation/break-up. Video on Demand is the only reason we even have cable. Technicians have been out and changed everything but their underwear, to no avail. It is obviously a server/bandwidth problem, but in a YEAR of calling in problems and dealing with customer service, no one in engineering/management has bothered to step-up. I guess they don’t need our business, so we’re taking our multiple-set-top-box-using, internet-router-renting, home-phone-service selves over to the competition.
