Need a job? Verizon’s Irvine office has 100

April 3rd, 2009, 12:01 am · 26 Comments · posted by

**UPDATE, 11:11 a.m.**: Verizon Wireless clarifies HOW prospective job hunters can apply for jobs. The link the company originally provided was incorrect. And no, you don’t have to speak Spanish to get the job. See below for updated information…

Good news for Verizon Wireless customers and local job hunters.

Verizon Wireless needs to fill 100 full-time jobs at its Irvine call center for shifts between 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Pay starts at $14.90 an hour.

I guess there are two interpretations of this: Either Verizon is getting an earful from customers for awful service (unlikely) or it’s doing pretty well as a business and needs more customer service folks to support its growing customer base (more likely).

Either way, this is good news for Verizon customers because it means more people are available around the clock to offer support.

For the job hunter, the better news is that Verizon is apparently a great place to work. It was rated as one of the O.C. Register’s top places to work last year. Plus, Verizon has major benefits that are missing from most companies. Remember February’s “Tanking economy? Ha! Verizon employees get bonuses” story? Most employees received a 9 percent to 10 percent bonus last year.

Ken Muche, the Verizon spokesman who told me of the openings, also pointed out other benefits of working at Verizon: health care coverage from day one, a 401k program that matches 6 percent of salary, annual bonuses, profit sharing, a $20 maternity care program that covers nearly everything, and tuition reimbursement. There’s an adoption assistance program, temporary child or elder care, an on-site health club and diet-friendly lunches at its on-site cafeteria. Also, if you’re bilingual, you can earn an extra $1,500.

At a time when companies are cutting jobs and trimming benefits (hey — I’m about to go on a company-mandated furlough next week), it’s nice to hear that some companies still appreciate their employees.

Interested applicants can apply online at www.verizon.com/telecomjobs.

**UPDATE** Verizon Wireless provided the wrong link. The correct site is www.vzwcareers.com.

On this page, users can select the location (Irvine) and type (Customer Service) to find the customer service openings, which is Job ID 231059

Here is the description of the job:

Responsibilities

Looking for a challenging career with unlimited potential for growth? Then it’s time to consider Verizon Wireless. We believe in peak performance, and that means more than just striving to be the best – it means being the best. We’re a confident and powerful team of individuals who feel part of something special, and drive towards the goals we set high for ourselves. You too? Then you might be perfect for a career as a Verizon Wireless Customer Service Representative.

Your ability to listen and truly hear what’s being said makes you a certified problem-solver. Always ready to lend a helping hand, you easily share your supportive nature with those around you. You’re proud of your past successes and seem to achieve them effortlessly in part because your interpersonal skills are so great. Your dependability and enthusiasm for routinely exceeding expectations make you a perfect fit for a Verizon Wireless Customer Service Representative position.

Qualifications

We’re looking for individuals who are great on the phone – that’s where you’ll do most of your work – and who are serious multi-taskers. If you’re adept at working between multiple computer screens and have good technical skills, then you’ll thrive in this structured work environment. At least one year of customer service experience is required, and a college degree is preferred.

In return for all of your efforts, we’ll be very proud to offer you comprehensive benefits that are truly Total Rewards, including: award-winning training, a competitive salary, medical/dental/vision from day one, 401(k), work-life programs, phone discounts, generous tuition assistance, and limitless opportunities for advancement.

Equal Employment Opportunity

Muche, who read the comments on this post, also wants to point out, “I can tell you that speaking Spanish is NOT a requirement. Yes, Verizon Wireless employees can earn more money in some jobs if they bilingual — a customer service representative would be a good example , as would a retail sales representative position. But we do hire a lot of people for these types of jobs that only speak English.  Our customers are very diverse and so are our employees, which is a point of pride for Verizon Wireless.”

End of update.

Of course, a few other O.C. companies always seem to have openings, including game developer Blizzard Entertainment in Irvine, which has 88 openings today (see “At Blizzard, it’s free swag, valet parking and playing games all day,“) and Cox Communications in Rancho Santa Margarita (see “Cox one of the best places to work in Orange County“).

Well. I tried to apply, but it’s not listed on the Verizon website.

  • JK says:

I can believe the first part that Verizon is getting an earful from unhappy customers. There’s not enough space here to tell you all the problems we’ve had with Verizon and that’s in multiple locations. I wil never use that company again.
If it’s business picking up it’s only because of the insane amount of money spent on advertising. I could never work for a company this inefficient.

  • Jobs apparently aren’t listed. But you can use the Verizon’s career site to submit an application.

I checked there website and it is pretty sad if you do not speak spanish you are not qualified.

of course Verizon won’t publish my comment so I will have to send it to everyone in my email list and have it sent around the world!!!

Here we go again – racist people leaving comments on the web. All I have to say to you people is that soon you’ll have to speak Spanish to get a job in California. If you don’t know how to speak Spanish… learn the language or get out!!!! Remember Southern California was Mexico. Try somewhere in the south or the middle of the US where you’d be more comfortable.

  • Susan says:

OC REGISTER…some of the comments here are unrelated and totally unwarranted. I work for Verizon Wireless…and this is the most diverse company I have ever seen in the United States. I work with a team of 7 people, and we all come from different races…INCLUDING LATINO.

  • Kevin says:

Wow, $14.00 whole dollars an hour before taxes, oh boy ! Great work if you live with your parents a mile away from the Irvine site. Might as well work at Starbucks, at least the hours would be better. This would be a decent wage if it was in boobsville, West Virginia.

  • Tessa says:

At this pay rate, you are really talking about first jobs out of high school, as you cannot do much of anything with the net pay. They should post this at the local junior colleges, the scheduling and pay would work well for the students.

  • Linn says:

Wouldn’t it be nice if the information in the article was accurate and actually aligned with the published needs of Verizon with a true link?

  • Mommy says:

This job is for Verizon Wireless not Verizon. It is on the Verizon Wireless website, I just checked. I used to work in this call center. Great environment & people and they really take care of their employees. The only reason I left was to stay home to raise my kids. They have AWESOME benefits. Excellent health insurance and annual bonuses & pay raises. Health insurance is extremely cheap and the best coverage I have ever been on. I highly recommend this company.

  • ocgurl says:

    I prefer Sprint!

  • Sidney says:

Tamara, you have to be thinking to yourself, an unpaid furlough has to be better than reading some of these inane comments!

  • sanders says:

    hire americans
    increase the pay to $25/hour
learning spanish is not some thing difficult
    great reporting, Tamara
put more on available jobs, on this website

  • Homatlast says:

I just checked the link for employment and there is no Irvine, CA listed.

  • DG says:

Please do your research before you publish in your paper. The verizon 100 jobs in Irvine is BOGUS.

  • Mommy says:

I just checked the link and it is there. Go to Verizonwireless website, scroll down to very bottom and click careers, click choose your career, customer service, click CA-Irvine, customer service and it pops up.

  • krissy says:

yeah!!! this job posting is a lie!!! just like the post office is hiring!!! lol

  • krissy says:

I can’t believe you have to speak or learn spanish just to get a job or more money!!!

  • Josh says:

Unfortunately, they are only hiring people smart enough to find the job posting.

  • ugugugu says:

LOL ha ha ha hah h aha

  • Jack says:

If this position is anything like when I applied for a FIOS Technician job, Verizon will call you 2 ½ years after your interview with an offer.

    Have fun waiting kids! LOL

  • ration alley says:

This $14.50 is standard dorporate-wide entry level pay for customer service reps. It appears there are two shifts-which looks great for students or new reemployment. It’s what most reemployees from the financial sector, etc. are going to be facing. I know of individuals that have worked second jobs to make up the difference. These shifts would accomodate that. Power to anyone who steps up and gets the job. Not many people will be scoffing at this pay in the future. US is going from “supersize me” to downsizing. But noone will agree with me at this time.
Comanies that are conservative will last longer and continue to provide jobs. Remember it’s just a starting pay, there is room for promotion in any company if one works for it. Good luck.

  • Homatlast says:

That is $105 more per week than Unemployment ~ no thanks! (Don’t tell EDD!)
