Smithsonian ChannelAmerican culture fans, science buffs and history junkies rejoice. Another HD channel! Time Warner Cable will add the high-definition Smithsonian Channel by June, the company said today.

The agreement between the cable company and Smithsonian Networks also includes Smithsonian HD shows on Demand and, when available, the Start Over and Look Back service. The services let viewers who catch a TV show midway to rewind to the beginning regardless if it was  recorded.

The channel, which even has its own blog, is only available in high definition. For the most part, HD channels are free to Time Warner’s digital cable subscribers.

For non Time-Warner folks in Orange County, the Smithsonian Channel is available from these TV companies:

  • DirecTV, Channel 267
  • Verizon FiOS, Channel 625
  • AT&T U-verse, Channel 1118
  • Dish Network customers are temporarily out of luck. A note on the Smithsonian’s site says, “DISH Network has elected to suspend service of SMITHSONIAN CHANNEL. We hope to resolve the situation shortly so that SMITHSONIAN CHANNEL can be restored.”

A warning to OC residents: Time Warner cable is a joke. The menu is horribly organized, the DVR capacity is comparably tiny, the remote is un-intuitive…just terrible all around. We were so fed up with it that we finally switched to AT&T Universe, which is the absolute best provider we’ve had.

I have the Smithsonian HD channel. It could be one of the great channels of TVdom but they botched it big time. Shows run over and over dozens of times. With their vast stare of history, they produce drivel like a monkey show in some country about nothing.

  • Smart Shopper says:

BEWARE of AT&T that force you to pay for an expensive TV package in order to get any of their top high speed internet plans. Can’t wait for FIOS to become available in my area

I disagree with Wendy P. I enjoy my HD Time Warner/DVR set-up. The picture quality is excellent and I have tons of channels. The high-def Major League channel is the bomb, and all kinds of great shows I enjoy (Castle, Bones, Monk, Psych) look great too. It was epic to DVR and watch the final/3rd season of Survivorman too. The high-def Discovery channel is great!

    Dear Gadgetress,

In your blog post above you wrote, “For the most part, HD channels are free to Time Warner’s digital cable subscribers.”

I am a Time Warner Cable subscriber. Time Warner does not offer HD channels for free.

Also, while you were gone, Time Warner Cable added MGM-HD. It is on ch. 422.
