Time Warner Cable adds 4 HD channels but cuts two others

May 18th, 2009, 4:58 pm · 8 Comments · posted by

Time Warner CableJust when Time Warner Cable was on a roll with new HD channels, it confirmed today that the two-channel HDNet will exit quietly later this month.

HDNet, the high-definition network from Mark Cuban (of Broadcast.com, Dallas Mavericks fame), was one of the first HD-only (actually, probably the first) networks that offered movies and canceled TV shows, like “Jag” and “Arrested Development” in pure HD.

“After many discussions and a lot of hard work, we have not been able to reach terms. We were therefore required to provide legal notice that we’d have to drop HDNet and HDNet Movies,” said Darryl Ryan, spokesman for Time Warner’s Southern California office.

However, Ryan has a peace offering for customers in Southern California. The service will add four new HD channels by May 27. Those are:
  1. FOX Sports West HD, channel 463, will include Los Angeles Lakers, Angels and Los Angeles Kings games, plus PAC-10 football and basketball games.
  2. FSN Prime Ticket HD, on Channel 464, will include Los Angeles Clippers, Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Dodgers games, plus UCLA and USC sporting events.
  3. Crime & Investigation HD, Channel 420, is A&E Television’s channel dedicated crime and mystery. Programs will include “Headline Crime,” “The Big House,” and “With Malice.”
  4. KPXN (ION) HD, Channel 410, will feature older TV shows including “NCIS,” “Boston Legal,” “ER,” M*A*S*H” and “The Drew Carey Show.”

The sports channels and KPXN will be included with all basic cable subscribers plans beginning May 27. The Crime & Investigation channel will be added to the HD tier.

With the changes, this leaves the cable company’s HD tier, which is $5/month, with just two channels, Universal HD and the recently added MGM HD. But the tier goes back up to four channels after adding in the new ‘Crime’ channel plus the Smithsonian HD, which joins the HD tier next month, as previously reported.

Thanks for the info. It’s a pretty big ripoff to charge that much for the higher speeds. The speed is already there and is no difference to the provider. Another problem is that they promise you a certain speed, and it never gets close to what they claim…but you still have to pay for it.

I’ve have been disgruntled Time Warner Cable customer for quite some time.
This is the last straw. I watch quite a bit of programming on HDNet and HDNet Movies, so I will be canceling cable service from TWC.

Dish Network and DirecTV both carry HDNet/HDNet Movies. Whichever satellite provider will offer the better deal will get my business.

TW obviously doesn’t think MMA and wrestling fans matter. i suspect they will find out how much influence they have after they drop HDNet’s.

    How sad. I love HDnet.

AT&T U-Verse, here I come! Better service, more channels, higher Internet speeds and a lower, non-introductory price.

  • ken marks says:

AT&T U-Verse it cuts out for several minutes all the time. All you get is a frozen picture. Happens all the time. The lowest cable speed from TW is sooooo much faster than the lowest U-Verse speed.

HDNet was the best movie channel, next to TCM – and who knows when they’ll be in HD. I hope my landlady doesn’t have a problem with a dish.

What will the HD versions of M*A*S*H and The Drew Carey Show be like, quality wise?
