Verizon Wireless turned on two more cell sites in Orange County, the company said today.
One is in Mission Viejo, offering better coverage along Alicia Parkway and Trabuco Road.
The other new site is in an industrial neighborhood near East Street and Vermont Avenue in Anaheim.
This should offer better reception not only for passing drivers, but residents and businesses in the area.
The upgrade is part of Verizon’s $90 million investment to add 3G service to existing cell sites in Southern California, as reported earlier (see “Verizon spends $90 million improving 3G, indoor coverage.”)
The company is adding the 850 Megahertz frequency, which penetrates through walls better. The new frequency also expands and adds capacity to its 3G broadband network.
All of Verizon’s cell sites in Orange County are now 3G friendly, says spokesman Ken Muche.
Past stories on Orange County cell reception:
Come on VZW, where’s the improvements for Portola Hills??? The pilot polution makes your phones unusuable.
I live on the street where the new “tower” is located. It’s not really a tower. They attached the panels and instruments to a already existing water tower. I will say that the reception is 10 times better. I have a verizon razr and when in that area, I would always lose calls. It is a hilly area. And now I haven’t lost one.
I hope that the 850 Megahertz frequency isn’t damaging!!! I only live a couple houses away and if it’s penetrating the walls, then my brain will turn into a raisin!
Hmm… 10-times better? That could be worth a few brain cells (heh). But yes, that’s a trade off. Of course, if cell sites really impacted health, let’s hope the government would be doing something about it. So far, there have been no significant studies proving otherwise. But the FDA will take action if cell phones admit unhealthy radiation, plus the FCC regulates cell tower/site radiation.
Jake, you get more RF exposure from standing in front of your microwave warming up your food than you will from the antennas a couple of houses down. Typical clearence is 7 to 10 feet away from antennas. In major cities it’s very common to have cell antennas mounted on high rise residential buildings. As Tamara stated, the cell companies are regulated by the Federal Gov’t on exposure levels.
