For the astute readers who noticed that Cox Communications failed to roll out 9 new HD channels to Orange County customers Monday, there indeed has been a one-week delay. Obviously, the launch date of July 28 has come and gone (see earlier post “Cox Cable adding 9 HD channels in Orange County“).
Lana Ong, a spokeswoman for Cox’s Orange County operation, said the company is having some technical difficulties.
“We know that our customers were eager for the new HD channels however, we had to push back the launch to August 4th because we had trouble getting the feeds from our corporate office in Atlanta,” Ong said.
The new channels will appear starting Aug. 4.
Those channels are:
| Channel Name | Channel |
|---|---|
| FX HD | 717 |
| BET HD | 748 |
| MTV HD | 749 |
| VH1 HD | 750 |
| Spike HD | 752 |
| CMT HD | 759 |
| Comedy HD | 760 |
| Nickelodeon HD | 770 |
| Cartoon Network HD | 771 |
| New from Cox, July 2009 |
To see what channels will be displaced, please read the earlier story, “Cox Cable adding 9 HD channels in Orange County.”

‘Concerned’ should change his name to ‘Selfish’. ‘What about me, me , me and what I want’. Title of article is very descriptive – if you are not interested in this subject, don’t read it. This article string was of concern to me.
Gadgetress, any way you can find out from Cox if the new channels will be switched digital video or not, e.g., whether TiVo HD owners are screwed? It would be sincerely appreciated!
TiVoGirl — Cox’s Ong says this delay had nothing to do with switched digital. However, Cox is testing switched digital but when it rolls out the service, the company says it will inform those users with a CableCARD. See my earlier story, “More HD channels coming to cable TV, TiVo users impacted.” Of course, TV companies don’t usually like to just offer up information like that so if you are missing some channels next week, let me know!
BTW, I’ve found that’s how ATT’s Uverse is able to have such fast channel change times, using SDV.
Tamara — we TiVo HD/Cox subscribers here in Irvine are already missing a handful of channels (3 HD, the rest standard def) so they are already using SDV to some extent. What we don’t know is if these new channels will be SDV or if we TiVo users will be able to get them. We’re hopeful but not optimistic
Cable box users are reporting that they have the new channels, but no joy for TiVo users.
When will the OCR print a television guide that tells us what’s on television? All we seem to get is what’s on the OC cable stations and nothing that is on satellite!
Wow I don’t think I’ve used a printed television guide in at least a decade, it would be such a step backwards in time for the Register to print one. And a waste of paper! Just use the guide that comes with your satellite service, it’s much easier!
Aside from Comedy HD, the rest are a waste of bandwidth – same goes with all the foreign language channels. Bring fiber to my home already.
Verizon FiOS 127 vs. Cox Cable 62?????
Cox, you have a lot of catching up to do. Second to the last in the list?
Thanks for checking on this and giving us the update. Must be a paperwork/contract thing from the corporate office in Atlanta to get the feeds running.
A little extra by Cox, but not much….they added sports channels, The Mountain (MountainWest Sports Network) on channel 313 and CBS College Sports on 314.
What about BBC in HD? Who gives a #$# about CMT and Spike. WHy do even need HD for Dukes of Hazzard reruns and bad 80′s movies?
Interesting… BBC America HD apparently launched on July 20. I can’t find any U.S. TV service that offers it (but I may not be up to date). But you can speed things along yourself by requesting the channel from your TV provider. BBC HD conveniently offers this request form: *LINK*
Thank you gadgetress – follow up provided as promised. I have been wating quite some time for Cox to add Comedy Channel which I know is broadcast in HD. It appears by your HD provider channel count comparison that Cox has a lot of catching up to do. I will check for the 9 new channels on 8/4 (greatly anticipated) – if they are not available, I will post another comment. Please go ’60 minutes’ on them if there are any further delays. Thanks again!
Get HD antenna and get rid of your cable bills.
I switched from Cox to ATT Uverse this week and it blows Cox away. Twice the HD channels and $30 bucks less a month. Its faster. Cox tries to get you to stay by saying but but but we are faster. BS. Cox, on my street anyway, was sluggish because its a shared service. I was paying for highest bandwidth. Uverse’s DSL is straight to my home, don’t share the phone lines with anyone. I’ve found the channel change times to be 1 second vs 2-3 seconds. 4 recordings at a time vs 2 for Cox. And I can manage all of the call, etc features on line. I really like it so far. I’m consistently getting 17 mb up and 1.5 mb down. When I went in to turn in my cox set top box, another guy was doing the same thing. That was just 5 minutes in the store. I wonder how often this is being repeated every 5 minutes….
Cox is a bit costly, I’d agree. That being said, I get nearly 100% uptime, and consistently good performance. For instance, right now (nearly 6:00pm on a weekday), I’m getting 33.35 down and 2.64 up. Pretty tough to beat that, and even if I could, what would be the point? As active as I am on the Internet, I can’t imagine needing more than 2.5 Mbps up…
Not to say that other’s experiences won’t vary, but my experience with Cox has been good enough to keep my business. For now, at least.
