Cable TV bills quadrupled in 10 years, but look what you now get

Cable TV's investment pays off -- customers now paying 4x as much for variety of services.Noted: An interesting report about the cable TV industry from the cable industry highlights the benefits to consumers. One early point: Instead of just a few dozen channels in 1998, the now-60 million cable customers get hundreds of channels, movies and TV shows on demand and phone and Internet service.  Of course, the price has change too. Instead of the average cable subscriber paying $27/month in 1998, they pay approximately $100.

The report, prepared by the Microeconomic Consulting & Research Associates for the National Cable & Telecommunications Association, examined the industry’s response to policymakers and whether it benefited consumers.

Conclusion: “In sum, we find that consumers have benefited enormously from the cable industry’s investment in infrastructure and development of new digital services. In fact, we estimate that the total benefits to all U.S. consumers are now approaching $35 billion annually.”

Biased? It’s not supposed to be. Apparently, the cable industry and researchers cringe everytime the Federal Communications Commission says that video prices are rising to the detriment of consumers. This is a report to point out how much money the industry has invested in the technology and how much cable now has to offer.

By offering multiple services, like video and home phone, cable providers can improve the quality of all services and most importantly, charge a wee bit less. No doubt, cable Internet is so much better than dial-up or DSL. And it’s very convenient to get home phone service bundled with TV.  Bundled savings are between $5 to $50. The report even pulls from Orange County’s Cox Communications to show the savings (these prices are from March 2009 and have changed):

Cox Communications bundles saves money.

Of course bundles make sense because it means a company is making more money per customer. It also means the company has a very committed customer. For a triple-service customer to leave, that means canceling a phone number and possibly an e-mail address and losing all his recorded videos.

So whether it’s cable companies offering generous promotions to move to bundles or consumers just want everything in one bill, these double and triple packages are a high growth area. The report does overlook one major issue: poor customer service. Being in my position where I hear frequently from consumers about their cable frustrations, it makes me wonder if people wouldn’t mind paying even more for cable services if service improved.

The report goes on. And on. And on. It loses me well before I reach this:

Given a population of m consumers, assume that a consumer of type i will choose between A1 and A2 and has the following willingness-to-pay for one unit of a good Aj, j = 1, 2:

But as mentioned earlier, the report does conclude the cable industry’s investment in its product for the past decade has benefited consumers. Even as the industry is losing customers to competitors like Verizon FiOS and AT&T U-verse, the number of digital video and bundled subscribers is growing. And because of that, you can’t just compare price changes over the years. Feature changes need to be included in the mix. Decide for yourself by reading the full report HERE (a PDF) or just the press release.

“Cable costs quadruple over 10 years”? – not out of my wallet you haven’t. Unless you are in an RF-barren area, I don’t believe cable has had real value at any time in its history – especially now. What started as a commercial free medium has turned into a very expensive nationwide ‘habit’ in which commercials are now being paid for. What a marketing coup those guys did on us! I make it a point to find excellent content for my family without subscription services like cable or satellite. I find ton’s of content online (Hulu, PBS, ABC.com, etc.) and via digital broadcast over the air – and I never have to deal with questionable customer service. I use Vista Media Center (with HD tuners) as my DVR (excellent DVR by the way!) and I receive true HD signals over the air at no additional costs. I figure over 10 years alone I have conservatively saved $6000 not subscribing to cable and I have never felt like I’m missing something that valuable. While watching niche shows like catching crabs or blowing things up to prove a point are novel, I certainly don’t think they are worth the $6000. However, since the cable companies have quadrupled their costs in 10 years I know that my perspective is the minority.

I have Cox Cable and I hate it. I pay $125 a month for internet, phone (local area only), and basic cable. I have no premium movie channels (HBO, Showtime, etc.). My movies come from the Encore Channel. I primarily watch fox news and encore (when I can find a movie I haven’t seen 20 time before). All the other trash that doesn’t interest me (i.e. sports, Asian, Hispanic, African American, and brain dead sitcom channels) are all a waste to me. When is Congress going to do something about this. I write but they don’t listen.

What’s really amazing is that in the end, there will still be NOTHING you actually want to watch!

      Right, Spence.
That’s why you’re on the internet instead. Smart move.
Heck get Netflix and watch all kinds of movies on your computer of TV (extra box required),

TV is for kids, and a few sports fans and history buffs.
Also shopping on TV is a great way to get ripped off! S&H more $ than products, and non-refundable

Cox is the worst. In my area it is the only internet provider and that goes out EVERYDAY (and when you work from home it is a real anger provoker). Can’t wait for another to come here. Dropped their phone service three years ago to go to a internet phone service (for about $11.00/month) and went to direct tv for the better 1080 digital service (cable gives only 720). All in all better tv and phone and one day will look forward to affordable satellite internet provider.
