Big TV Everywhere news day. First Verizon joins the trial. Now, leader Time Warner Cable announces more TV networks have joined the effort to offer paying TV subscribers the same shows online.
Time Warner, a cofounder with Comcast Corp. of the TV Everywhere effort, said programmers now include TBS, TNT, HBO, CBS, Syfy, BBC America, AMC, WE tv, IFC, Sundance Channel, Discovery Communications and Smithsonian Channel. More networks are expected to join.
Shows provided by these channels will be free online to Time Warner customers as part of an upcoming trial. But, of course, you must pay for traditional cable TV services to access the Web shows.
TV Everywhere is an attempt by paid-TV providers to keep subscribers from leaving for free shows on the Web. The idea is that paid TV services will work together to provide the same content to their subscribers on the Web.
But this should be better: It will include programs not already available for free online, says Time Warner. Plus, the content will more quickly follow the original air dates.
Time Warner Cable plans to offer TV everywhere trials “in select markets over the next few months,” starting with 5,000 customers, said the company.

I looked at my Totally Worthless Crap bill and wanted to do a “Movement” of my own in the enevlope and mail it to them!
$70 a month for garbage!
They should give me HBO for free!
They are just as crocked as A-Del-Pee-On Ya!
“Free” TV to “PAYING” customers?!?
Bunch of BS, they must be “paying” the OCR to advertise for them with this bogus story.
high speed internet and half a brain every show you want to watch (sans live sporting events) is already out there for you to download and watch.
You idiots complain so much. You have options–If you don’t like TWC, get Satellite or FiOS/U-verse. Better yet, save your money and watch what you get OTA.
And to ironic: This service is for paying customers. So any monthly payments are already a given. So yes, this is a free addition to what customers already get.
Matt, I would rather watch my shows on a trusted site than click through 2-3 porn ads to get to a video with crappy quality and choppy sound.
Just how is this “free”? I don’t call TV I have to pay for free in any way shape or form. I killed my cable and my satellite when I got sick of paying a big bill every month for shows that were junk and being forced to sit through commercials on top of it, so I sure as he**am not going to pay for watching a show online. The ads should pay for the show and the cable bill should pay for the technology to bring the show to you and that’s it. You shouldn’t have to pay for channels you don’t want or a premium for those you do. If the ads are paying for the show and I’m paying for a high speed ISP, then I want to be able to log into the network’s website and watch their shows for no fee at all. I’m not going to pay a cable company for doing nothing and if the networks had a brain, they’d dump the cable companies and satellite companies and go with sites like Hulu and the likes instead. Trouble is, there are too many idiots out there who will pay for it and as a result there will never be “free” TV for anyone.
