UPDATE, 9/2/09: Cox responds to a reader’s questions. See below.
The O.C. Register’s own OCVarsity.com crew is teaming up with Cox Communications to offer in-depth coverage of the 2009 high-school football season on TV.
The new “SportZone” will be recorded live in the Cox3 studio in Rancho Santa Margarita. Long-time high school sports broadcasters Gordon Spencer and Paul Westphal will host the show and feature star athletes, top plays and recent game results, says Cox.
OCRegister high school sports reporter Steve Fryer will also provide his two cents on the game.
Of course, to watch the content, you must be a Cox cable customer.
The first show airs Friday, Sept. 11 at 11 p.m.
Here’s the Register’s announcement.
UPDATE: In response to questions from reader grandma102, Cox sent me these answers:
1. Will there be a broadcast schedule in advance?
Cox: Yes, the schedule is online at www.cox3.com.
2. Will there be more than one game televised per week?
Cox: There will be one game per week, though some may air on Thursdays. You can see the complete schedule online at www.cox3.com
3. Is this in competition with the ‘game-of-the week’ in previous years? or is this a combo of that through Cox?
Cox: SportZone is being offered in addition to Cox’s Emmy Award-winning show, Game of the Week.
4. Does Mater Dei have their own broadcast or is that just a taping and big-screen live viewing at the games?
Cox: We suggest checking with Mate Dei, as they do have MDTV, but we aren’t privy to their plans this year.
Lots of questions
1) Will there be a broadcast schedule in advance?
2) Will there be more than one game televised per week? (some non-Friday games… whenever..)
3) Is this in competition with the ‘game-of-the week’ in previous years? or is this a combo of that through Cox?
4) Does Mater Dei have their own broadcast or is that just a taping and big-screen live viewing at the games?
Lots of $ and resources for beaming high school football; the CCs would kill for that.
Cox has a special page for the upcoming show at http://www.cox.com/ocpv/cox3/sportzone/. Few specifics are listed but from this page, viewers can also submit games they want covered.
However, if you look at Cox3′s own schedule HERE, the first Sportzone show will spotlight Laguna Hills vs. Trabuco Canyon. Looks like the same episode will be rebroadcast on Saturday and Sunday at 12:30 p.m. and also later in the afternoon.
Cox 3 also has a lot of their programming available On Demand if you are a Cox digital customer.
Hey TimeWarner! Are you paying attention to this?
Gee, H.S. football, how dull.
Why can’t direct tv have this?
