Cox says no to new NFL channel, but offers alternatives

September 12th, 2009, 8:45 am · 33 Comments · posted by

Cox has no plans to carry NFL RedZone.Football season officially starts Sunday and the NFL has created a new channel allowing TV providers to offer more games and coverage to viewers.

But neither cable company in Orange County has signed on to offer the NFL RedZone. Other TV providers — including AT&T U-verse, Verizon FIOS and Dish Network — are offering the channel.

For Cox Communications, the cable company has “no plans to carry the NFL RedZone channel,” said Lana Ong, a spokeswoman for the Rancho Santa Margarita company.

“However,” she added, “Cox knows how important football coverage is for our customers so this year, Cox will offer up to 375 football games including over 170 NFL games and more than 350 football games in HD at no additional cost for Cox customers.”

Cox offers digital cable customers access to the NFL Network, NFL Network HD and NFL On Demand including NFL Replay which offers extended highlights from every single NFL game played that week.

No response yet from Time Warner Cable, which isn’t offering RedZone or the NFL Network. But according to several reports, it looks like football fans won’t get the same coverage on Time Warner.

This is a great example of why Cox continues to lose customers to Direct TV. They have a perfect opportunity to counter the NFL Sunday Ticket on Direct TV and aren’t smart enough to see that. Their reps response in this article is a joke. Nobody is fooled by adding up the regular broadcast games available everywhere and saying your are offering something special.

  • Randy says:

    Cox cable are thieves.
I called and told them that after my ordeal with them.
My reply from them was “There are many people who dont think so”.
Direct TV has been a great alternative.

  • Locrian says:

Well, at least we have 1000 spanish and asian-language channels. God forbid they add a channel subscribers would be interested in. Thanks Cox.

  • Bill from NY says:

We all need to say no to Time Warner Cable, period – regardless of the NFL coverage..

  • Johnb says:

Which only show how little time warner thinks of its customers. I don’t know who’s planning their programming, but they’re screwing it. up. I’m now looking at switching over to Dish.

  • Jimmy says:

Time Warner is a fearmongering bully. Switch to dish and tell them to shove their cable–they were never about the people only about milking the people for every dollar possible.

  • Gee Dub says:

Monopolies, on both sides of the dispute!

    Ain’t capitalism wonderful?

whoever made that decision got fired today. what a dufus.

  • ResortDude says:

Cox totally sucks. We had terrible billing issues and their customer service simply does not exist. We are so much happier with DirectTV. Their customer service is awesome. I had one billing issue which was partially my fault because I did not order the right equipment and they fixed it with minimal issues. Also, they actually keep a record of their conversations with you. What a novel concept. DUMP COX and TWC.

  • Football Fan says:

Get DirecTV. Subscribe to the NFL Package. I’ve been getting every NFL game for 13 seasons. Dumped cable long ago.

  • Brian says:

Cox has again letdown their customers. NFL is beyond important to its customers and their response is to superficially enhance their football game coverage numbers by lumping college games into the mix (375 games total). The RedZone channel was the only way we could enjoy all the games in some capacity without having to be with DirecTV. Now, I have to watch the Jets/Texans and Vikiings/Browns. Thanks for dropping the ball Cox or should I say fumble?

  • OCLYN says:

This is exactly why I am no longer a Time Warner customer

  • K in LF says:

I moved in with someone earlier this year and my roomie was unsure of the Internet speed so I called COX to find out..I got 3 differnt answers for 3 differnt people. 9mbs, up too 12 mbs and 15mbs….

Is it that hard to read a screen and tell me what my services are?

  • K in LF says:

I moved in with someone this summer and my roomie wasn’t sure how fast the internet connection was. So I called Cox to find out and was told 3 different answers by 3 different people. 9mbs, up too 12mbs and 15mbs.

Is it that hard to read a computer screen and tell what services I have???

  • Logical says:

Cox is horrible!!! For anyone having problems with them, simply cancel your service and get with one of the dish networks. Cox has horrible customer service and ever since switching to dish, my bill is 36% less and I have 122 more channels!!

  • Pookie says:

On top of the competition from sat companies, it is also very important to note the competition from ATT/U verse and Verizon Fios. All of the alternatives to cable are offering their customers more programming including interactive programming, like Facebook and Flickr apps. If the cable compaines aren’t careful, their fate will eventually be the same as that of the American Car Companies. And all the politicians that took donations from the cable companies can bail them out too.

  • Llama says:

When I called to cancel my Cox Cable TV service (switched to Directv) a year ago, I told them one of the reasons was NFL Sunday Ticket. Their scripted counter-argument to that comment was that they have every game available the next day On Demand, and that NFL network shows a lot of games during the week (NFL Rewind). After laughing out loud for a minute or so regarding the absurdity of those arguments, I said they better say they’re canceling my account right this second, or I threatened to cancel my Internet service too.

  • I am currently with Time Warner and haven’t really had any issues with them, good or bad. If I want to switch many people here say Direct TV. Why specifically? Don’t they charge extra for HD and NFL packages? I must admit I am a creature of habit.

  • Alex says:

Who cares for football…..It isn’t the end of the world that you can’t see the game. Our country is fat enough as it is.

    • Joe says:

Wow you sound like an ignorant pompous fool. There are plenty of people who love football who are thin…and plenty of people who don’t and are still fat.

  • 0311 says:

Cox is just making me mad. I have a problem with wires inside the wall, called customer service and they said it was my problem. Not to mention I pay over $140 a month for the worst service I’ve ever had. I don’t recommend them for anyone moving to the area, look for another provider.

  • Jon says:

Cox is just about the worst service out there. Very limited channels at a premium price… sadly I am stuck with them, as my landlord would not allow a satellite. Cox could have partially redeemed they’re lack of sports with this new NFL channel, but after hearing Cox won’t carry it, I have to say I am not surprised at ALL.

Thanks again Cox, for actually caring, and looking at your competition….. like I said, I would be long gone, had my landlord approved.

  • bk says:

I’ve had Cox for about 7 years now and I’m totally dissatisfied with their cable service. The prices are outrageous for what you get. Right now I have a DVR and basic cable and the bill is almost $50 a month! I only get channels 2-13, 27, and 28. The rest of the channels are in Spanish or some other language.

When I had expanded cable, I was paying over $110 a month.

  • Bobomo says:

Your headline should read: “Cox says no to new NFL channel, but offers BS PR spin”

Further proof that cable is struggling with bandwidth.

  • Question says:

Anyone care to answer my question regarding Direct TV vs Time Warner? Thanks.
