California moves forward to ban energy inefficient TVs

Green TVsUPDATE, 4 p.m.: Another local TV manufacturer chimes in that it exceeds the proposed requirements. See Mitsubishi update in bold below.

—————————————–

In an effort to ban the sale of energy inefficient TVs, the California Energy Commission today released its final draft to amend the state’s Appliance Efficiency Standards code.

The change would reduce TV energy consumption by 33 percent by January 1, 2011, and then 49 percent by 2013. A final vote is expected in November.

The changes affects TVs sold after Jan. 1, 2011. To date, 850 TV models already meet the 2011 standard, while 231 meet the 2013 standard, according to the commission. Here are the changes:

California Energy Commission proposes stiffer energy regulations on TVs sold in state.

TV companies have already improved the efficiency of their TVs. Irvine-based Vizio has a whole green effort, starting with last fall’s EcoTV, which exceeds Energy Star 3.0 requirements by 15 percent. A second TV, the VF551XVT, uses 50 percent less energy than current Energy Star standards.

Samsung plans to release the Luxia brand, which uses 40 percent less power than traditional LCDs. Available TVs in that line appear to use the latest LED technology to brighten screens and use less energy. Sony has the Eco Bravia line, which  also use 40 percent less energy then the rest of the company’s LCD TV line.

**UPDATE: Mitsubishi TVs, also based in Irvine, also reports that it is ahead of the regulations. The company’s LaserVue TV operates at 135 watts, which is one-third the power of today’s LCD TVs, and one-fourth the power of plasma TVs.

The Energy Commission will hold a public hearing on October 13 in Sacramento (here is a link to the meeting). Consumers and businesses can express their sentiment by sending an e-mail to docket@energy.state.ca.us. A vote is expected November 4.

Can you say waste of time, effort and money?
So, from the article, the industry is already way ahead of the commission in efficiency standards but they want to create all of this bureaucracy anyway. Is it me or is the California Energy Commission doing this just so that they have something to do?

Just another example of special interest groups and corporations running government.

  • Bob Holt says:

I state should ban big spending legislatures first.

  • robert says:

oh please. why dont we spend money on locking up baby rapers instead?

  • jimmydee says:

I turn GREEN every time I read another fawning, eco-friendly story.

Energy saving is a good thing. Why not just post what the TV’s energy usage is, so consumers can make apples-to-apples comparision?

    Fat chance.

    Not in this fascist State.

  • Rebecca F says:

Yes, great idea. While we spend taxpayers money on restricting energy consuming televisions lets use those Amber Alert signs to remind drunk drivers to call 911. I wish someone would propose a law to suspend all lawmaking. Nothing good has come out of it lately. California is getting ridiculous.

What’s this green nonsense? The only green I know of is the European green party that’s hard core Marxist. I understand the original US green movement paralleled the European greens.

As to the TV’s, technology seem to reduce energy cost by the year. This is another California mandate on industry. It will be amusing when the manufactures decide California is not worth the business.

I love the color and black levels on my Panny plasma – you’ll have to pry it from my cold dead hands.

  • OCItalianGirl says:

Well, since those older model TV’s are a little less expensive, this will prevent people from owning one. Which will, yes, cut down on energy, but also limit the amount a product these companies sell. Which will affect their bottom line, cutting into profits, leading to lay offs, etc. I mean really, aren’t there more pressing issues than this? This looks more like something the politicians are doing just to make it look like they are doing something “environmentally conscious”. I’m going to look up who is sponsoring and signing and make sure I don’t vote for any of them.

My wife and I will be gone by the end of the year to Colorado
so Kalifornia can go climb its thumb!
In the mean time I’ll stick with my 25″ Sony Monitor
Its 15 years old but its got a great picture!
My electric bill is only $30 a month anyway

I ate too much salad for lunch
so i’m going to have a big green movement!

This is how the Sacramento buffoons waste money. It’s like a disease, I guess. If you wallow in the public trough long enough, your bound to catch something.

Save money and get what you want when the time comes. Drive to Arizona or Nevada and bring back the TV of your choice. The state will lose again because no sales tax was collected here.

These nanny state dullards only do things like this so that they can show someone that they are actually doing something besides taking up office space. Once this is over and done with, they will go back to sleep for another 20 years.

Somebody out there voted for these democrat liberal “”fools”" my guess it is the unions that get these “”worthless good for nothing scum bag bottom feeders”" elected it is graft and corruption at it’s best.

  • X-DEM says:

The State legislature has too much time on their hands. Make them part time and take away their taxpayer paid for cars! While working the legislature on a part time basis, dock their pay when they fail to meet budgets and deadlines. What useless people! Who are the idiots that vote these yo yos into office?

  • what next says:

Can we as Californians move forward to ban inefficient government?

  • jimmydee says:

16 comments – and all of a similar viewpoint.

How is it these unconscionable fools get elected in the first place?

  • Kevin says:

First they came for our toilets, now our televisions?

  • VoteThemAllOut1 says:

The things our legislators can worry about just baffles the mind. Until we move beyond voting Dem and Rep and start voting them out this is what we will get. A part time legislator may be a good start.

  • Bobomo says:

California has the largest economy in the country, there is no way businesses are going to decide it’s “not worth the business”.

I don’t understand you libertarians. If Walmart used it’s influence as an economic powerhouse to leverage manufacturers to do their bidding, you’d all be positively giddy and atwitter about the “free market” and proudly saluting the flag. California does the same thing for the benefit of the health and well being of ourselves, our children and our planet, and you act like someone crapped in your soup.
