Cox fix for TiVo users delayed

September 25th, 2009, 12:02 pm · 16 Comments · posted by

TiVo logoThe local Cox Communication delayed plans this week to be the first company wide to roll out the first Motorola- TiVo adapters. Cox was busy unveiling new software for its video-on-demand service. Cox now hopes to offer the TiVo device in Orange County before the end of the year.

That leaves some TiVo users without access to on-demand movies and shows, plus any channel that has been turned into an on-demand channel.

Because of a change in technology, TiVo users who rely on CableCARDs are unable to request on-demand shows without this adapter. This change doesn’t affect TiVo users who have a set-top box from the cable provider.

Cable companies are moving to the new switched digital video technology in order to use the pipe to a customer’s home more efficiently. By reducing the number of nominal channels streamed 24/7, a cable company can add new high-definition channels to the stream. The other channels are still there, but only broadcast when requested by the subscriber. To watch those, a TiVo user with a CableCARD will need this new adapter.

“We’ve maxed out on bandwidth,” said Lana Ong, spokeswoman for the Rancho Santa Margarita cable provider.

The cable companies are again hosing their customers. Really…isn’t it time to move to satellite TV. Cable cards and Tivo are the only two things that have kept me with Time Warner. Without receiving their benefits, I no longer have anything hold me to cable. Another box that uses my electricity and eliminates the nice look of having your flat panel TV mounted on the wall.

I don’t get COX and their decisions about priorities. They have agreements with TIVO for the internal cable cards on the TIVO HD boxes. They have a new agreement with TIVO to be able to load the TIVO software into COX DVRs (will provide significantly enhanced functionality). Yet they continue to show disdain to those of us that actually have the TIVO/cable card boxes in place. They made a commitment to me and a TIVO rep on the phone late Aug that the adapter testing would commence early Sep, and “for sure” would be avail by EOY. Now – they say “maybe”. Not sure why they treat us as less important.

When I asked one tech support guy why were paying the same as cable box folks yet get fewer channels because the cable card, he responded that ‘we only pay $1.95 a month for cable card, not the $3 for the HD box”. I guess that makes us “end of the line” customers. Great customer service attitude, eh?

    • Cox Communications Sucks! Never go with Cox!

  • Bob A. Booey says:

Any idea if these new tuners will support the current ability to record and watch different shows with our dual tuner HD Tivos?

  • Martin McIntosh says:

I really don’t care about other SDV channels, I just want The Science Channel!

Cox has been providing this service for over a year in Arizona, why isnt this available to us? Cox has a solution that works, but we can’t have it because they want to test a possible replacement. Give us the current solution and let the people in AZ beta test the new Motorola Tuning Adapters. Everybody wins.

    • Jim says:

I believe AZ uses Cisco (Scientific-Atlanta) equipment, not Motorola. Same for San Diego. We must be the guinea pigs for Motorola-compatible tuning adapters.

  • Chris says:

@Bob: Any idea if these new tuners will support

These are “tuning adapters”, not just tuners. They just enable the TiVo to send a signal back to the head end saying “give me channel ### here please”.

So you can still record two channels at once (assuming 2 S-Cards, or 1 M-Card)

Tamara – do you know out of the total HD channels Cox makes available today, how many would be affected by SDV that require the special tuner?

i am ready to buy a Series 3 TIVO HD XL box with the [2] cable cards and get rid of my current COX DVR [it is beyond bad]. I’m curious as to what current HD channels i will not receive. May affect my decision to move to the TIVO system now.

FYI – i dont subscribe to any of the pay channels like SHowtime, HBO, etc. I only receive today the HD channels in the 700 range that are part of that package.

        thanks
        jeff

    • Bob A. Booey says:

      gotcha. thanks!

  • TiVoGirl says:

Current Cox OC high-def channels you can’t get with a TiVo or other cable card device:

    717 FX HD
    732 Science HD
    749 MTV HD
    750 VH1 HD
    752 Spike HD
    753 Travel HD
    759 CMTV HD
    760 Comedy Central HD
    770 Toon HD
    772 Animal Planet HD
    798 Game HD
    799 HD Pay Per View

Until the most recent additions, it was only 3 channels (Travel, Science and Animal Planet) but all of the new HD channels Cox added this summer were SDV and therefore non-TiVo compatible.

There are also about 20 non-HD channels that can’t be received with a cable card — all but a couple of them are in the foreign language tier (400′s).

Cox has been swearing up and down that the tuning adapters were coming Real Soon Now for TiVo customers for over a year. They obviously don’t care at all about us.

    • TiVoGirl says:

I accidentally left out two and transposed another:

      748 BET HD
      770 Nickelodeon HD (not Toon)
      771 Cartoon Network HD

      Here’s the full, correct list:

      717 FX HD
      732 Science HD
      748 BET HD
      749 MTV HD
      750 VH1 HD
      752 Spike HD
      753 Travel HD
      759 CMTV HD
      760 Comedy Central HD
      770 Nickelodeon HD
      771 Cartoon Network HD
      772 Animal Planet HD
      798 Game HD
      799 HD Pay Per View

      (Sorry!)

    • Thanks TiVoGirl! Cox had not responded to my question on this yet.

      • TiVoGirl says:

Don’t hold your breath :) It’s not working out so well for us TiVo peeps.

Thanks for staying on top of this tuning adapter story. It’s important to us TiVo users. Consumers really should be free to choose a different DVR service when the one Cox offers falls so far short — without losing the channels we’re paying for.

(And how do they keep a straight face while calling FX a “least popular” channel? In what universe? It was the channel I most wanted to see Cox add in HD, and now I can’t get it.)

        • Lori B says:

I agree TiVoGirl – FX Rocks! And I wanted it in HD so, SO badly.

Cox does not value the TIVO user. I don’t have high hopes that we will get the adapter by end-of-year. I’m not even sure a call-in campaign would rattle their cages, as most employees that answer their phones have no idea what you’re asking for. Therefore, it would be impossible for them to tally a trend of increased requests.
