Actually blacks were allowed to be members of the mormon church. At that time they could not hold the priesthood. And it wasn't because of the threat of funding that caused the change. The deep rooted so called history claim is obviously bogus.

I would invite and challenge OCFAN and any others that believe as OCFAN and that TRULY "read and understand things" before making judgment to read the Book of Mormon and pray whether or not it is true and to watch General Conference for FREE this weekend and THEN make an educated assessment of Mormonism.

Actually, up until a certain point, blacks were not allowed to be members of the mormon church. They were thought to be the mark of Cain [first murder committed, as told by the Bible.] But the U.S. government became aware of this fact and threatened to pull any funding from the mormon church because it was illegal to deny someone their right to religion. The president of the mormon church at the time soon received a message from God that their claim was wrong and blacks were free to join. So, there is deep rooted history in OCFAN's claim. Obviously, not every member believes this but there it is.

Well, the mormons have made a lot of gains with hispanics. So, Santa Ana and Anaheim might look to mormonism before South County which is full of white Evangelicals-Saddeback for example. Evangelicals are more critical of Mormons than any other religous group. Think back to the Republican primary were a of Evangelicals would not vote for Mitt Rommey.

Pete -- it's channel 567 on Uverse.

Cannot lose - church's have a constitutional right to support or propose societal issues, which is what Prop 8 was. And remember, the doctrine of separation of church and state was about protecting citizens from the government sanctioning a state church, not to prohibit churches from exercising their freedom of expression. In essence, churches actually felt like the state was or would be imposing restrictions on their rights to operate according to their own moral codes.

I can totally see how the gay community thought it got a raw deal via Prop 8. But the only way to resolve this civilly is if the gay community tries to understand the perspectives of churches. And for me personally, I'd like to see the compromise be that the state has nothing to do with marriage -- and only grants civil unions to everybody (gay and straight). Marriage can be a private ritual in whatever organization a couple belongs to.

Glenn Beck, a mormon, is clearly an example of a mormon's political neutrality.lol
I'm amazed how he has stayed out of this conversation.
I wonder if he gives 10% of his salary to the LDS as they are required.

No I am not talking about church members, i would never suggest such a prohibition. I am talking about actual church involvement, which you know it was. Perhaps the removal of the existing exemption from taxes would be fairer. I mean, why should the church be exempt from supporting the local fire department and police department? If the church uses its pulpit (or whatever you have) you should rick your tax exempt status, and this applies to liberal churches that make suggestions of how to vote too.

Stay out of Government??? Are speaking of Senator Orrin Hatch, or Senator Harry Reid? Both are members of the Mormon church, which officially happens to be 'apolitical". If you have a problem with the members of this church voting their conscience, please READ THE CONSTITUTION!!!

Cannot Lose - Not sure what you mean by "stay out of our government" -- but I assume you're referring to the political involvement of LDS church members in societal issues. I'm afraid we'll be involved as long as we have opinions and a vote. Personally, I believe the California Supreme Court is to blame for the Prop 8 debacle. By overturning a California law established by a clear majority about 10 years prior, it intruded into the lives of voters who didn't want a few judges determining what's best for society. So in my view, Prop 8 was simply about restoring what voters had already decided, not intruding on anyone's rights. And the courts affirmed this recently. That being said, if gay activists can muster enough support to overturn Prop 8 -- either by initiative or via the legislature -- then we will accept this as a society. It's how the political process works. I will give you a tip: establish a stronger grass roots organization next time. The folks who ran the No on 8 campaign missed the boat on that. It's why Yes on 8 was successful. And admittedly, Mormons had a lot to do with that. We used the same grass roots approach to do a lot of community service.

Actually you are right. You can believe in what you want, and so can I. You are right, your origins are no odder than any other religion, I guess I chuckled more because they are just more recent (at least the written formalization). Which means nothing. So go forth believe and stuff. Please just stay out of our government and other peoples lives that don't want your intrusions and all is fine. Prop 8 was an intrusion into the lives of others that you do not understand, but felt (at least the church) that was fine. Take shots at others, be prepared to take on fire. How about a truce, and you go live your religion to your fullest and let others live theirs in what ever fashion they wish as long as it is not physically threatening to you. Sound fair?

Actually you are right. You can believe in what you want, and so can I. You are right, your origins are no odder than any other religion, I guess I chuckled more because they are just more recent (at least the written formalization). Which means nothing. So go forth believe and stuff. Please just stay out of our government and other peoples lives that don’t want your intrusions and all is fine.
So, if I think (and I'm allowed my opinion) the mormon religion is a joke, that would make me gay too? And are you saying that the mormon's financial support of Prop-8 was not an attack on gay people? Certainly looked like it to me. (I think) your religion and all others are just silly stories that have grown into a level of power that you need to face the world everyday.
