AT&T U-verse

Thanks everyone who left a comment about AT&T U-verse availability in your neighborhood. I’m going to update my map. Stay tuned for a link… For everyone else, please continue to let me know by commenting below if you can order U-verse.
————————–

Slowly but surely, AT&T’s TV service called U-verse is popping up in cities across the state. The company says the service, an alternative to cable TV, is now available to 3 million homes in California.

Service, however, is not available to everyone living in the 225 cities and counties where U-verse is offered statewide. This is because AT&T relies on local city governments to allow facility upgrades within neighborhoods and not all cities have obliged, saying they don’t want more ugly boxes decorating city streets.

In Orange County, U-verse is available in certain parts of  Aliso Viejo, Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, Fullerton, Garden Grove, La Habra, La Palma, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Orange, Placentia, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Ana, Stanton, Villa Park, Westminster, and Yorba Linda.

Originally, AT&T had targeted more cities but dropped its pursuit after running into roadblocks with the cities. Those cities include Irvine, Laguna Woods, Newport Beach, San Clemente and Tustin. (See earlier coverage on the slowdown in Orange County on this page: “The AT&T U-verse impasse in O.C.

Question of the day: Can you order AT&T U-verse TV at your house? Help me track the service and tell me where you are by leaving a comment below. Leaving your zip code would be informative. Thanks!

But as part of this week’s announcement, the company says it invested nearly $7.9 billion in wireless and wireline (which includes U-verse) networks in the state between 2006 and 2008. It even quotes Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle, who applauds AT&T’s move:

“I have always believed that choice and competition in the marketplace benefits consumers,” said Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle. “AT&T’s commitment to deliver a choice for video and high-speed Internet to the residents of Anaheim, and to hundreds of other cities across the state, has only reinforced this belief. Consumers win when businesses compete.”

There’s no mention of how many of those 3 million potential customers actually subscribe. Those numbers could possibly come out Thursday during the company’s next earnings report.

At last count, AT&T U-verse’s TV service had 1.6 million subscribers nationwide in June (see earlier: “AT&T’s U-verse TV jumps to 1.6 million subscribers“). Comparably, Verizon FiOS, another new cable TV alternative, had 2.5 million customers. Both services continue to grow while cable TV companies reported a decline in subscribers.

I have AT&T Uverse in Irvine, CA 92618. Nothing special about the service. Just another option.

  • sc says:

Wish U-Verse is available here in Tustin 92780. I wish city of tustin would consider the residence’s benefits outweight the “Pretty” look.

  • Cosmo says:

    I have U-Verse @ 92844. Switch from TWC.

  • colony says:

Not an option in Anaheim, 92805 (Colony). TWC interface is horrible, hoping for TiVo interface upgrade now that I am stuck in a contract and can’t get Uverse….(I used Uverse previously and would break my cable contract and pay the penalty if it were made available).

BEWARE OF AT&T!!!! BEWARE OF AT&T!!! BEWARE OF AT&T!!! THEY MAKE $$ PROMISES THEY DO **NOT** KEEP AND THEIR SERVICE IS HORRIBLY INFERIOR!! THEN, THEY TRY TO HIT YOU WITH APPRX $1000 FEE FOR NOTHING IF YOU TRY TO CANCEL!! We battled for FIVE LONG YEARS with them trying to get better service, all the while paying our monthly bills on time. Finally, we paid all incurred final charges then tried to cancel. We then spent SIX MONTHS fighting a $1000 “cancellation fee” they were trying to hit us with for NOTHING. This, after we had been loyal customers, DESPITE all the headaches, for FIVE YRS. During that SIX LONG MONTHS after cancelling, we received LATE NOTICES and made numerous calls and spent HOURS of our time just trying to GET OUT, fearing the entire time they would try to ruin our perfect credit. Instead of apologizing and acknowledging our struggles, the “customer service” personnel were smug, verbally abusive, and argumentative, saying things like “If your service was so bad, why did you stay for five years?” They finally “settled”, saying we owed only $18. (!) I paid on the spot and RAN LIKE THE WIND TO VERIZON. AT&T WAS A GREAT COMPANY 30 YRS AGO….ALL HAS NOW CHANGED AND THEY ARE PATHETIC LYING THIEVES!! I HAVE TWO ACQUAINTANCES WHO HAD SIMILAR NIGHTMARE EXPERIENCES WITH AT&T. HEED THIS WARNING…IF YOU SIGN WITH AT&T, BE PREPARED TO CONSTANTLY FIGHT FOR “DEALS” THEY “PROMISE” YOU, AS WELL AS ENDURING THE CONSTANT FRUSTRATION OF POOR SIGNALS AND SERVICE. BEWARE OF AT&T!! BEWARE OF AT&T!!! BEWARE OF AT&T!!!

  • No Dice says:

Nope, it’s still not available in my neck of 92692 (Mission Viejo).
When I moved here 14 years ago, I checked into AT&T DSL, and they said “Soon” because they were installing mini-COs in vaults around the city. In fact, there’s an underground vault right across the street, and still no DSL, no U-verse.

  • Tony says:

92705 the service is available BUT… when I was having the Uverse service installed the installer responded very surprised when he said “Wow! You’re actually getting a picture here!” (really, the actual quote from the installer). Then he explained that the system would only allow the signal to travel a certain distance before it was substantially degraded. We’ve had the service a couple of months. No noticeable improvements over DirecTV, regualr AT&T phone service and AT&T standard DSL. In fact, I have to back the DVR up a few seconds (on live TV) because it doesn’t seem to buffer properly and the show is jumpy, and my internet connection has been lost more times in the last 2 months than it ever was in the previous 6 years. Whenever I get an extra minute I’ll be looking into other options.
Moral of the story: Ask where you are with regard to the allowable distance from the box.

  • Todd says:

“I have always believed that choice and competition in the marketplace benefits consumers,” said Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle.

How about letting us choose whatever cable company we want instead of being forced to take on whatever crappy company our city chooses.??

  • Jim says:

My zip code is 90631 and I have had Uverse since April ’09. I have been an ST&T customer for many more years. It has worked out pretty good and has been reliable…. until this past weekend. The service went out on us this past Saturday and was very sporadic until yesterday, so that was a Saturday – Tuesday adventure in trying to get it working again.

Contacting their customer service you need to go through a phone tree that is ridiculous and I’ve had to do this about 4 times since last Saturday. I was finally given a direct number at my persistence. I was very upset over this, as I use the internet for my work and this down time definitely cut into my productivity.

My first diagnostic from the tree phone was that my issue was caused by me not setting up my voice mail…. yeah right! Don’t insult my intelligence with a stupid reason like that!

We had 4 technicians come to the house to “check things out”.
Was finally told the problem was due to the recent rain and it was repaired. All of the people I talked to were very pleasant, much more than myself, but I was not happy with this disruption in service.

From talking to one technician, his notes from the office indicated that I was a very unhappy camper. I didn’t jump on these people as I know it wasn’t their fault and that does not make things go any smoother.

I do admit that I do like their service and the bundle package they offer, but if you loose connection, you lose everything, TV, Phone and Internet.

  • Dave says:

Available in Woodbury, Irvine zipcode 92620.

  • Richard says:

We have it in the Inland Empire… well, at least Riverside 92506. Had it installed last week.

  • Nick says:

time warner has the worst service i’ve ever experienced in cable television. dvr is buggy as hell with regular delays in functionality (hit a button…nothing…hit another button…nothing…hit a bunch of buttons…nothing…2 minutes later every button you hit plays out all at once). the dvr regularly tells us we’re almost at capacity when we are no where near capacity; delete one thing and it jumps back down to a low “used” percent. it’s constantly re-recording shows when we set it for only new shows; won’t record some new airings at all. when watching on delay, the navigating can become horrendous: watching the 7th inning on delay, hit fast-forward, and suddenly it jumps to live in the bottom 9th and the results of the game are ruined for me. also seems like they think it’s cool for the internet to be regularly down at odd hours (between midnight and 6 a.m.), though this can be prime gaming/computing time for me. and all this for a whopping $133/month. totally horrendous. if a damn tree weren’t blocking my ability to get dish network at my apartment, we woulda dropped twc long ago. and neither uverse nor fios are available alternates. we’re EXTREMELY unhappy with twc. and though it’s not her fault, these gadgetress updates about how available these alternates services are in OC only serve to tease the HELL outta me! S.O.S. (save my sanity!)

    • Nick says:

unavailable in costa mesa, 92626 (near harbor and baker), by the way.

    • Donna says:

so true about twc, was a subscriber for 27 years, they messed up my bill, and then blamed me and wanted me to pay with cash in their store, I have never bounced a check written or electronic, told them where they could go, and I went to Direct TV, saved money and very happy, AT&T was not available , but I will stay with what I have now as long as it stays as good as it is now.

  • JEAN says:

I have had U-Verse for several months now and we have had a lot of problems, from screen freezing on the TV, and major problems with the remote controls. We now have a total of 17 remotes that they have sent to us and only two will control the sound and channels. I have been so frustrated with their method of support (you have to do it yourself) and if it doesn’t fix the problem they just send another remote……if it weren’t for the fact I can tape 4 programs at once I would be looking for another option. I came from TW and I have to say their service was terrific and at no charge whereas I understand you have to pay with U-verse to get a technician to come out. Is anyone else having trouble with the remotes??????

  • Steve says:

Not available in Santa Ana, zip code 92704, Santa Ana/Costa Mesa border

  • Jim says:

Jean… have had no problem with any Uverse remote and we have 4 set hooked up to it. Also have not had to pay for a technician to come out, this past weekend.

  • Dave McMullen says:

I currently have U-verse – they installed a “box” at the corner of Gisler & Colorado in Costa Mesa (92626) about two months ago. As soon as it was done I signed up! I’ve been loving the service…

  • Lori says:

They’re coming to install tomorrow morning (10/22). I live on the border of Tustin and Santa Ana (92701)

  • Dave says:

Had uverse in Anaheim loved it but moved to an area of placentia that doesn’t have it and forced back into the arms of time warner for supposed fast internet. Uverse please rescue me

  • Kim says:

I am waiting until March when my contract expires with DirecTV then I’m in. I’ve heard great things about it.

    Zip Code 92823

  • Andrew in Costa Mesa says:

They can double that to 6 million if they started carrying BBC World like Verizon FiOS.

  • Brian says:

When will it come to San Clemente? U-Verse?
