Microsoft is taking a stab at selling its own software and toys directly to consumers. In a store. In Mission Viejo.
This will be the company’s second store nationwide. The first opened last week in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Our Mission Viejo reporter Niyaz Pirani is covering Microsoft’s attempt at brick-and-mortar retail. It’ll be the first to go head-to-head with an Apple store at The Shops at Mission Viejo. Here are some of Niyaz’s past stories.
Niyaz plans to camp out with everyone Wednesday night and blog about his experience right here.
Will the new Mission Viejo local store be as popular as the Arizona one? According to one report, “hundreds of people who waited as long as 12 hours,” showed up for the opening last week. Those folks appeared to be eying the goodie bags and free entertainment a la pop singer Ashley Tisdale. Some words to describe the new store: “Really cool,” “about time,” “really cool” again, and “one last shot” for Microsoft.
Here are lots of photos of the new Arizona store from Destructoid.com.
As for the new one in Mission Viejo? Who out there will be going on day one? Let us know because we want to interview you! Leave a comment below or e-mail thegadgetress@ocregister.com.
I won’t be there. I will be at work. I find store openings and product launches fascinating, including the folks who take the time to line up on opening days or launch days. I even work in the technology industry, AND live a few miles from the store. But the hype machine doesn’t work on me, never has. Being the first or lining up, means very little to me. That same piece of software will still be there down the road when I am ready to buy it. Guess I am just a boring person who doesn’t need “the latest and greatest” to make my life feel complete.
Good luck to the store however, I hope things work out, and I hope the folks in line have a good time.
Maybe Niyaz is trying to get a better experience from that mall after witnessing that hot dog eating contest the other day (http://foodfrenzy.freedomblogging.com/2009/10/25/dude-downs-25-dogs-at-derby-deli-for-1000/13393/)
Awesome. Thanks for posting that link for me. =)
Won’t there.
We switched to MAC’s after the Vista fiasco. Couldn’t be happier….
Heh.. maybe you’ll be among the people standing in line at the Apple store waiting for it to reopen next month…
Nah, with 2 Mac laptops, a Mac desktop and the myriad number of iPods in this house, we’ll have no need of anything when they re-open.
They move the iPhone to Verizon - then you’ll get me to stand in line for something!
Hear! Hear! I will never go on AT&T again, iPhone or any other superphone: Apple missed the boat going on AT&T
They tried to go with Verizon initially but Verizon wanted control (replace batteries, non-working phones) at their stores and Apple wanted to do that at THEIR stores - so no go.
The iPhone is on a different system than Verizon so it requires a complete new iPhone to run on their network….something that’s been in the rumor mill for awhile.
I am hopeful
My mom always complain about “playing too much computer” Well, what’s wrong with that. I just got my “Master” ceritification on MCAS - Microsoft Certified Application Specialist” and passed Excel, Access, Word, Powerpoint and Outlook. I can’t wait to see what’s new at the store. I’m 13!
I’m kind of sad to see so many against a store however it’s good to have that choice. In these tough times, a new venture is refreshing and kind of motivating. I welcome the competition to other “stores” and this will be a stop on our “tech-gang” Saturday outings. I wonder “Linux” store will open soon? lol
Why camp out? It’s not like they are giving away free PC’s or copies of Windows 7.
I read on one Web site that the first couple people recieved free Zune HD’s in Arizona actually.
People in Arizona don’t have much fashion sense, lol. Can’t imagine anyone walking around in SoCal showing off their trendy new ZuneHD, roflmao.
The headline asks will I be there? Of course not, I’ve always been a Mac guy. My wife uses PC’s for her work, it never works right. We have three Mac’s and two PC’s in our home. The Mac’s work perfectly and the PC’s hardly work at all.
We still have the lone PC at home too. NEVER, EVER works right either- no matter what we do!
Once you go Mac, you never go back
Not really sure just what they can be selling other than Microsoft software and the Zune. Which brand of computers will they be carrying?
Apple store has Apple computers, Apple TV, Apple iPods, Apple iPhones, Apple monitors etc. etc. etc.
I’m not a Microsoft hater - use it at work - use Apple at home. Do prefer Apple I have to say, but use both equally. It will be interesting to see the store and see what they are offering. Hope it brings a nice boost to the Shops at MV.
I AM looking forward to the Apple store reopening and will definitely be perusing its shelves.
