For anyone hoping to order Verizon FiOS TV service, the company reported some disappointing news last week: Fewer customers are signing up for service.
FiOS service does tend to be more expensive than cable, but you do get more HD channels, faster Internet and nifty TV widgets.
But the most discouraging aspect for all who hope FiOS succeeds is that Verizon spent the quarter targeting homes already in FiOS territory. In Orange County and other parts of Southern California, the company slowed down on expanding in new neighborhoods. Rather, it focused on signing up more customers in existing FiOS locations.
One theory: People who want it, sign up immediately. Everyone else? You’ve got to have more enticing offers (read: cheaper than cable with no strings attached).
Still, FiOS continues to grow, just slower than many had hoped. Same is true in Orange County, which wasn’t completely shut out of expansion.
In fact, construction has just wrapped up in Seal Beach and Los Alamitos, Verizon’s Jon Davies confirmed.
The single family houses and apartment buildings were mostly in following areas in Los Alamitos:

In addition, Verizon completed work in Seal Beach last month focusing in on the area north of Marina between 1st and Pacific Coast Highway.
Verizon is also focusing on apartments, condos and other multi-family dwellings in Orange County.
“As you know, we’ve been working to reach agreements with landlords and as [we] complete that step we can install the fiber so residents can order FiOS,” Davies added. He mentioned two complexes with around 300 units that are in the process of getting FiOS:
1. A 62-unit complex at 16412 Harbour Lane in HB
2. A new 149-unit complex at 15100 Moran Avenue in Westminster.
Unfortunately, no new O.C. cities have been added to the FiOS expansion list but in existing neighborhoods where the service is available, penetration rates mimic national rates with 25 percent penetration for FiOS TV and 28 percent for Internet.
In Orange County, Verizon offers TV or Internet service in Brea, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, La Habra, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach, Stanton, Westminster and certain unincorporated areas. (Get more information about FiOS in Orange County HERE.)

How about AT&T U-verse?
It uses fiber optic technology (what Verizon calls FiOs) and it works great; I have it.
Does anyone know who has better coverage in OC?
Thanks.
Coverage? U-verse is definitely available in more areas in Orange County. I tried to map it once before but haven’t been able to maintain the map. This is my attempt to try again with FiOS and I’d love to offer a better map of U-verse & FiOS in OC based on reader feedback (and I got lots of it!). I need an intern! If anyone wants to help me map this, let me know!
Hey Verizon! The Villa Pacific Complex in Huntington Beach, located at the corner of Brookhurst and Hamilton, has more than 300-units. Our board gave the thumbs-up for FIOS at least two-years ago, but so far it’s only been installed in the single family homes all around us.
Another suggestion: How about the southwest corner of Slater and Ward in Fountain Valley? For some reason, there’s no access to cable TV/Internet at this location. I volunteer at a non-profit homework help center that meets in the coffee bar at Coastal Community Fellowship and we only have access to Verizon DSL. (www.surfcentraloc.com)
Interesting… Let me see if Verizon will give us an update on Villa Pacific…
Man! I’m so sick of Time Warner Cable and their lousy service at such a high price. We keep waiting for Verizon Fios to come to our neighborhood so we could drop the c*&p Warner cable!
Guess we’ll have to go to satellite as it looks like it won’t happen anytime soon.
At&t Uverse is better
As Cox is based in RSM, are we totally ruined for ever getting fiber run to our RSM homes by AT&T or Verizon?
Tamara – Here’s a map that might be useful:

Just type in an Orange County zip code.
thanks! I have looked at that map before. I wanted to offer a map based on verified reader responses and Verizon. But good point — I’ll add a link for those who can’t wait for me to map it.
Orange County, CA is one of the biggest markets that anyone could hope to capture. Verizon should be pro-active and lay the groundwork for FIOS in Orange County NOW. When the economy picks up and consumers feel more comfortable, Verizon will be glad that they were prepared to accept new customers. It’s like buying a car. If a customer must order a car from the factory because it’s not already in stock, they are more likely to look elsewhere to find the car they want. But if the car they want is sitting in front of them. they are more likely to buy it. Verizon, are you listening?
I think the Easter Bunny will bring me golden eggs for christmas before Verizon brings me time-warner-free high speed internet.
As a friendly reminder, in Brea the only areas that will ever see Fios (unless Verizon acquires AT&T, or Verizon files to offer CLEC service outside of their territory based on the CPUC service maps) is the far northwestern corner of the city, that is currently served by Verizon with wireline service.
For mapping purposes, here is the Verizon territory in Brea:
Puente St. on the east
Central Ave on the south
Then everything north and west of Puente and Central to the La Habra city limit on the west, and the Los Angeles county line to the north.
The Verizon pr hack may be able to update you if that area of Brea has Fios throughout, or just certain streets.
Last time I checked, not all homes had Fios available to them in that small section of Verizon’s Brea service territory.
Here’s a “fun fact”
Did you know that the small section of Brea served by Verizon for ILEC/Wireline service does not have the 714/657 area code? The area is assigned area code 562, which is served from Verizon’s central office in La Habra.
