Well, this is just terrific....the building I live in provides a free straight to the wall basic cable service for it's tenants, which obviously means we don't have a box in order to watch our tv. Needless to say this really REALLY sucks cos 4 of the only decent channels are no longer available which forces us to pony up for either satellite or TW, something that we really didn't want to do because of the extra expense. Bunch of greedy pricks ...they're trying to squeeze every last penny huh?

If the reason is truely a bandwidth issue, why doesn't Time Warner just make these channels Clear QAM Digital instead of encrypted digital? This way, those of us with QAM Digital TVs (that's probably all TVs manufactured in the past several years) can still received these channels. By encrypting these channels, it becomes another way for Time Warner's to boost its revenue stream (eg forcing us to rent/lease a set-top box).

After talking to the local presidents last week, a la carte is not happening so don't hold your breath. Yes, lots of competition online offering consumers a la carte may seem like a big threat, but cable is working on its own on-demand system with TV Everywhere.

I wish the cable providers would offer an "ala carte" option, where you only pay for the channels that you want. I resent having to pay for all of the spanish language, chinese language, and home shopping type channels THAT I NEVER EVEN WATCH! ... and I imagine that the spanish and chinese speakers out there probably feel the same way about ABC/NBC/CBS too.

Time Warner is full of it. Yes I have one out five TV that have the box (so I am part of the 80%). But now I can't watch AMC unless I get a box on the others. Why not drop the Golf Channel. It's a snore..... I think this a plan to get more money.

Maybe Uverse is in my future!

Quote of TWC rep "Ultimately, the changes will affect a minority of customers, according to Time Warner. Most won’t notice any change. Time Warner says that about 80 percent of its Southern California customers have digital equipment."

They have no idea how many additional TVs are hooked up without a box. I have 2 digital boxes and a third TV which they know nothing about. So, maybe 80% of the households have digital boxes, but I suspect there are only 50% or less of TVs being used on TWC with boxes. If my kids were allowed TVs in their rooms we would have a couple more TVs without a box. /Dan

Time Warner Cable and the other cables need a new business model because the Sats, U-Verse and Fios are taking over that market.

AT&T as a landline phone company was dead and they re-invented themselves with U-Verse.
