Time Warner adding 21 HD channels in December

Can you stand another Time Warner Cable story this week? If you are a subscriber, this is a one we’ve been waiting for: The company just told me that 21 more HD channels are now being rolled out to Orange County residents, starting with folks living in Tustin and Costa Mesa. Everyone else should have them by Dec. 10.
According to my count, this brings Time Warner’s HD offering to 75 in the Orange County area (see my new Time Warner HD Channel page: HERE). It’s still nowhere near Verizon FiOS, which has 133 HD channels (see the FiOS HD channel tracker HERE), but at least the cable provider continues to add channels. Reminder, it added Fuse HD yesterday.
Also, all of the new Time Warner channels are included with digital cable so current subscribers don’t have to pay a penny extra. CLARIFICATION, added 2 p.m.: Darryl Ryan, Time Warner director of media relations, clarifies that some of the new HD channels are only available to customers at no extra charge if they already get certain digital tiers, such as the sports tier. The new channels, such as NBA TV HD, don’t cost extra if you already subscribe to that tier. Thanks reader Tim for asking.
After interviewing the local presidents last week (my reports are coming soon, I promise!), they assure me that their goal is to get 100 HD channels in all markets as soon as possible.
The new HD channels coming next month are (drumroll please)…:
AMC HD (Channel 479) — Classic movies but also home to talked-about TV series “Mad Men.”
- IFC HD (Channel 480) — The Independent Film Channel has a ton of movies you’ve probably never heard of plus broadcasts from the Independent Spirit Awards and Cannes Film Festival and other movie festivals.
- WE HD (Channel 486) — Part of the WE tv network that targets women. Shows include “Bridezillas,” and “The Locator.”
- E! HD (Channel 487) — For entertainment, of course. E! is responsible for bringing us shows like “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” and “The Girls Next Door.”
- G4 HD (Channel 495) – The channel for video game lovers.
- The Style Network HD (Channel 488) — Possibly better know for housecleaning shows like “Clean House” rather than beauty and fashion.
- History International HD (Channel 455) — Need to know about the history of anything? There’s probably a show here for you.
- Investigation Discovery HD (Channel 449) — Another history-inspired show broadcast as part of the Discovery Channel lineup.
- CBS College Sports HD (Channel 474) — a 24-hour channel covering 25 men’s and women’s sports
- NBA TV HD (Channel 472) — All about NBA basketball, includes live games 4 days a week during the season. Your local game may not be broadcast however due to local blackout restrictions. Broadcasts international games on weekends.
- BBC America HD (Channel 448) – The British Broadcasting Corporation’s channel of British shows
- Turner Classic Movies HD (Channel 478) — Classic movies. How many? 400 a month, according to Time Warner. That adds up to “over 2,000 unique movies a year that aren’t on any other television channel.”
- HLN HD (Channel 447) — This is CNN’s Headline News channel, which cycles through the news, offering updates when available.
- MSNBC HD (Channel 446) — NBC’s cable news channel for 24/7 news coverage.
- WGN America HD (Channel 458) — Part of the network that offers Major League Baseball and NBA Basketball games and World Wrestling Entertainment coverage. Also includes movies and reruns.
- Outdoor Channel HD (Channel 499) — Hunting, fishing, off-roading shows, you get the picture. Channel says that 80 percent of its original programs are in HD so it makes sense to finally offer an HD version.
- TV One HD (Channel 498) — A channel targeting African American adults. TV
- HSN HD (Channel 489) — No need to go online to shop with the Home Shopping Network in high definition. Open 24/7.
- QVC HD (Channel 490) — Shopping TV competitor that is also open 24 hours a day.
- KMEX HD (Channel 400) — The simulcast of KMEX Univision 34, a Spanish-language network.
- TFTR HD (Channel 399) — The West Coast station of the TeleFutura network. Programming includes sports, particularly boxing and soccer, productions from Mexico and Venezuela and major motion pictures dubbed in Spanish.

Gadgetress, can you find out if Cox is adding more HD soon? Also, do you know if Cox will ever add HBO HD On Demand (all the other premiums Cox offers has HD on Demand)?
Are you sure all of the proposed new channels will be free? If I’m not mistaken, NBA TV and CBS College Sports are only available if you have the sports tier, which costs extra beyond the basic digital package.
Time Warner Spokesman Darryl Ryan said, “Yes, these are also FREE.” But let me double-check to see if they are part of a tiered digital package, as you mentioned.

Current subscribers don’t have to pay a penny extra, at least for now. Don’t be too suprise starting in 2010 you’ll recieve a notice saying monthly fees will be increased.
As Soon as FIOS is available in my hood I am gone. Too little, to late. They will be free now, and in Janaury TW will ask for their 10% increase.
Of course, in the process they’re killing even more non-digital channels that they currently carry.
I’ve gotten rather accustomed to checking the Weather Channel on my bedroom TV in the morning, but that’s going away. As is AMC. (And some other stuff I don’t care about so I can’t remember). It’s the Weather Channel I’ll miss the most.
I’d rather see The Weather Channel’s Weatherscan. Too much fluff and extra junk on the Weather Channel. The Weather Channel’s Weatherscan is just weather all the time.
Firstly, they’re like half a decade behind satellite programing. Secondly, I’ve been getting those channels since years ago. Lastly, in conclusion they’re waaaaaay behind satellite tv.
Too bad TW still has those god awful dvr boxes…
No Comedy Central HD.
The only way to watch South Park in HD is on the south park website. If it weren’t for most of the Ducks hockey games being on Fox Sports, I wouldn’t bother paying for cable.
I love HD as much as anyone, but who on earth needs to see anything on Comedy Central in HD?!? South Park? They don’t even move their legs when they walk!

It’s all about aspect ratio, my friend. I have an HD TV. It’s widescreen. Anything that is presnted in a standard definition aspect ratio looks stretched out and fuzzy.
If you ask me, why would you want to watch anything in standard definition? This whole adding standard definition channels one at a time is horse hockey. Just get rid of all the standard definition channels and make them HD only already.
Yeah I really don’t get Bobomo’s comment or poeple that think this way. What does the animation have to do with anything? I want to see EVERYTHING in HD. Widescreen, better surround, less pixelation. HD makes all shows bigger and better and more comfortable to watch. The content makes no difference to me.
TWC needs to get on teh damn ball and start getting more HD channels. If FIOS were in my area I’d jump ship in a heartbeat.
I’m sorry but 24 hour customer is why I will never leave Time Warner Cable, OH and NO contracts either. Can FIOS say that? NOPE

Last time I subscribed to TWC, their HD channels were terrible. Any fast motions caused breakup of the picture. Now with more HD channels I suspect their HD picture will get even worse. There were too many channels and too little cable bandwidth.
Got the channels here in Costa Mesa 2 days ago. Some are free as part of the basic digital service (WGNA, AMC, QVC, HSN), some are in the Variety Tier (like BBCA and WE), some in the Movie Tier (IFC and TCM), some in Sports Tier (CBSCS and NBATV).
You will get the HD channels to the basic service and those tiers that you subscribe to.
as soon as directv and fox sports settle their differences, i’m gone…goodbye twc…

What have you found out about TW adding the Big ten Network for us folks out here from the Midwest?
I am a TW customer with a TiVo HD DVR with cable cards. I need to get a Tuning Adapter from TW. They are required by law to supply it. When I call “TW Customer Care” they tell me I need a Tuning Adapter, that I can pickup at any cable store. I tried the stores in Anaheim and Yorba Linda and they told me I don’t need a TA and in any case they don’t have any. I registered a complaint with TW Corporate. As a result of the complaint, I just got a call from the local TW office. They didn’t know about the HD roll-out. They said that they would check it out and get back to me. We’ll see. I really wish that I could get FIOS!
Time Warner tells me that TiVo owners won’t be shut out of any channels with the new lineup, but if you are, please let me know. See my earlier report HERE, where Time Warner responds and says that its own letter to customers suggesting a TiVo users need an adapter is incorrect, at least for this current round of channels.

Yeah, TW makes ya jump thru hoops to use a TiVo. But I don’t see how anyone who watches more than 2 hrs a week of TV can use TW’s DVR. If I had to give up my TiVo, I would give up warching TV.
Does anybody know when FIOS or U-Verse might hit the Studio City area? I had to go to the Better Business Bureau with DirectTV, Time Warner are robbing me everyday. One HBO HD channel and no HD On Demand. Unacceptable. I love how Los Angeles produces most of what’s on the HD channels and we can’t get a proper outlet to view them. Sigh. I can see why people file share when there are no fair outlets to view content.
