That new HDTV you just bought? Outdated. Get ready to dump it after you hear what Toshiba America is coming out with this year: The CELL TV, which Toshiba announced today at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
It’s still an HDTV but every feature has been turbo charged.
It’s faster (480 Hz compared to existing 60 Hz TVs), brighter (1,000 cd/m2), blacker, more connected and converts 2D video to 3D video (see photos below from the press conference for some details). Gee, what else? It’ll include a 1 TB hard drive, built-in Blu-ray Disc player, Wi-Fi, DLNA (so it can access family photos, music, video and other files stored on personal computers) plus a high-quality video phone system.
The main feature: The CELL chip, which is the same chip that powers the PlayStation 3 and has been finding its way into certain advanced computers. Toshiba, which developed the chip with Sony, always intended to put it in a TV. This year, it will begin selling the CELL TV in the U.S. No specific date or price has been announced.
Toshiba says that the CELL processor has 143 times more processing power than current TVs. That should help it offer the smoothest 3D video, Web streaming and HD signals in the industry.

Looks great! How much? $12,000?
Don’t expect me to stand in line to buy that anytime soon.
Great. I’m having my “old” Toshiba delivered tomorrow.
wow…sounds like a winner…will it be thin as the new LED’s?
I have no interest in 3D until it is like the Jetsons….no glasses required.
I shouldn’t have to keep track of a pair of glasses to enjoy something. It is one thing to keep track of a remote and buying batteries (or remembering to charge) but to keep track of glasses is something different. One more thing, how many glasses will it ship with?
Not interested, thanks anyway Toshiba
Is this one of those TV’s that are now banned in CA because of the stupid new law that mandates how much power a TV is allowed to use?
Wow, that’s packed with features. I just bought and LED TV, though. AT least it’s connected to a PS3 to get some of the same goodies (alas, not 2-D to 3-D). Any idea what size(s) it will come in?
The Cell TV will be available in 55-inch and 65-inch “sometime this year.”
Dump my current TV?! What, and take out a 2nd or 3rd on the house to be able to afford a down payment on this baby? Sorry, Toshiba. I’ll pass. Good only for the rich and famous.
wow…if it’s going to cost me an arm and a leg, i still want to walk and be able to to do things around the house with both arms…i do believe that toshiba had spent a lot for r&d…but i’ll pass and wait until the price goes down…without losing an arm and a leg…
