What everyone is saying about Apple’s iPad

Apple Announces Launch Of New Tablet ComNow that the Apple iPad is official (read the details at “Apple announces its first tablet computer: The iPad“), the skinny little machine is getting all sorts of reviews from folks who had the chance to play with it and others who’ve only read about it.

Here’s a collection of observations from the Web and the newsroom:

>>This just in: Ken Brusic, editor for The Orange County Register and an iPhone user: What they did was really smart. We will order one to see how it might help us think of Ken Brusic, editor of The Orange County Registerproducing content in the future and see what our web site will look like on such a thing. The thing that I think is really smart is … instead of creating something new, they’ve created something that is really useful and continued along the same path that they started with the development community and the millions of ( iPhone and iTouch) users. I think it probably won’t be as useful as a Kindle for reading a book. eInk technology is really great for reading books because it uses so little power and the reading experience is really great. … I think magazines and newspapers will be great on the tablet. But 10 hours worth of battery life? I’ll have to see it to believe it.

► Brent Chow, Yorba Linda resident via Twitter: the iPad could rev the use of portable comps. Y buy a macbk pro when u can get a more powerful imac & ipad for about the same $

► OCMarisa on Twitter: I’ve been hoping for this. Been holding off on a netbook. I’ll get this with the 3G

► Peacekeeper357 via Twitter: Meh. Not bad, but not great. I’ll wait 4 next rev. I waited until 3G iPhone, I’ll wait on this.

► Jon Lansner, OC Register real estate blogger at Lansner on Real Estate (and an iPod Touch user): I’m not sure this is the game changer, technology wise. But packaging-wise — assuming it delivers the expected high performance — this seems like the “next big thing.” And to bring technology up a notch to the masses, It’s always been about the packaging — not the science anyway. This may indeed be the start of the  ”paperless” society many have dreamed of.

► Engadget, tech news site: “The screen is gorgeous, tilting is responsive, and the thing is super thin. Still, if you’ve used the iPhone before — and you can see the two devices side-by-side here — there’s not a lot of surprises here so far. …It’s not light. It feels pretty weighty in your hand.” (Read more)

► Leo Malone, Gadgetress commenter: Sadly it’s just a big iPod Touch. If it won’t run normal Apple laptop apps then it’s really just a toy. And when you consider it, a big uncomfortable one.

► Sonya Smith, our own beloved iGirl and major Apple user, via Twitter: The ipad has arrived. Now back to trying to sleep off this cold.

► Jason Joo, Irvine student and gamer, via Twitter:OH GOD, AT&T. NO NO NO NO. #ipadfail

► Gary Robbins, the OC Register’s “Sciencedude” blogger and iPhone owner: I recently bought a Kindle, which I like. But I’ll chuck it for an iPad because it looks like the device can do everything I want to do. Namely, surf the web, read e-books, text, email, watch movies and listen to music. I want one. Now. Today. This minute.

► Roxanne Hack, Web guru and iPhone owner here at the OCRegister, via Twitter: one way to get you boys to stop talking about iPad as if it’s a feminine product: we could actually start talking about feminin products

► Jezebel, a women-centric blog: Apple’s iPad announcement earlier this afternoon prompted a score of WTFing across the internet, prompting many to ask, “Are there any women on Apple’s marketing team?” Answer: Apparently not. (Period.) (Read more)

Take the poll:
OK. You’ve heard and read the buzz. We know it’s early — hey, you can’t even buy one yet — but we have to know …

So, will you buy one?

► David Pogue, New York Times tech columnist: Until I saw the demo, I wondered why you’d want an iPad instead of a laptop. After all, the price is about the same. And once you add a carrying case to the iPad—wouldn’t you worry about that glass screen bouncing around in your briefcase or backpack naked?—it’s about the same bulk and weight as a laptop. Now, though, it looks like Apple really has created something new. Criticisms of“Like a laptop” and “a big iPod Touch” don’t really do justice to the possibilities. (Read more)

► Adam Fucci, over at tech blog Gizmodo: My god, am I underwhelmed by the iPad. This is as inessential a product as I’ve ever seen, but beyond that, it has some absolutely backbreaking failures that will make me judge anyone who buys one (Read more at “8 things that suck about the iPad“).

►Jeremy Horwitz, editor at Apple reviews site, iLounge, who played with the iPad: The lack of an obvious tethering option for those who are already shelling out money for their iPhone service is a big miss, as well, but one that could possibly be addressed before launch. Here’s hoping. (Read more)

Looks like a big iphone! I can see all the people driving a car using that thing! hahaha….

Doesn’t look earth shattering, deffinately not some big new thing from Apple. Please….work on something else. Everything is starting to look that same. My first thought when I saw it….dang that a big phone!

  • LGT says:

No multitasking, no flash support, no care.

    • Obozo_The_Prez says:

Yup, and no user replaceable battery and the fact you need to use ITunes to load anything on to it means it’s pretty much DOA to me.

  • DISCO says:

Cant run any of the intensive rendering programs I use my existing PC convertible for, perhaps the i Slate will be more than a novelty.

  • honky says:

    IT IS JUST ANOTHER CRAPLE!

  • Mark says:

Will it have a usb port to transfer stuff or add an external drive or DVD. I know these are on their way out but I use my laptop for work and sometimes run a movie (DVD). Will I have to download the movies instead of hooking up an exterior drive. How will I move all my home made videos/mpegs? Bluetooth? Ugh.

  • Mark says:

How do I carry it around. With a case like an old Day Timer? Still, that is better than my bulky laptop…. so long as it will do everything my laptop does. 64 gig hardrive doesn’t go far these days.

The iPad really is just a large iPod touch, no matter what the pundits will try to say. The iPad runs on the iPhone OS, not Mac OSX; Which means you CANNOT run computer-based applications like Office, Quicken, etc. You cannot even print from iPad. And how does one transfer the iWork files to their computer? Should you always email it? Then you’ll have out of sync documents… There is no Flash support which means it is nothing more than a bigger-sized screen running the same Safari that is already on the iPod touch and iPhone.

Frankly, it is only an large iPod touch. It is nothing more than that.

As for Gary Robbins and others thinking it will replace their Kindle or other ereader: Beware because reading large amounts of text (i.e. a book) on an LED back-lit display is murder on your eyes and WILL lead to near-sightedness. That is why the Kindle and others employ an E-Ink technology. Apple would have been to have had their engineers develop a color, multi-touch E-Ink display. Now that would have been innovative.

I am actually very surprised that the new product released today turned out to just be a large iPod; I honestly thought that Apple was more innovative. I was thinking perhaps they would come out with a product that hinged and closed like a notebook computer does today, but without the keyboard and track pad and instead two screens. You could use it horizontally or vertically and the keyboard would appear on one side when you need a keyboard. Then if you want to read a book, both screens become pages in the book, similar to how an open book functions. And it would run on Mac OSX and interface with printers, TVs, etc. like a regular laptop does today. Basically, I figured they would come out with a new MacBook that eliminated the keyboard and mouse.

love apple but a large itouch?…wont even run desired apps. just another way for them to capitalize on apple market. already have an ipod and macbook, no need to ride the fan boy train.

  • logicisourfriend says:

Sounds like a feminine product. Probably as tempermental as a female on PMS.

So tell me why I want one of these?

  • Lucifer'sFlowers says:

Yeah, it sounds like a feminine hygiene product.

It’s a great concept and I wish Apple the best of luck with it; however, I have a laptop, so though I think it’s cool, I don’t really need it.

Apple is more about trend and fashion than computing anyways.

If anyone looks down on me because my laptop isn’t the latest, “Style”, then I feel sorry for their ignorance.

  • I_Poder says:

i’ll get one simply because i made wad of $$$ from AAPL

  • Ed says:

Apple announces a change in their corporate name for those that are too blinded by Steve Jobs sweater. Going forward they will be known as iTakeyourmoney

  • LameSurfer says:

I’m always dropping my IPod Touch. I can just imagine dropping the IPad as well. Sleek is not always a great design. Look at the picture of Jobs holding the IPad to show everyone. It looks like his about to drop it himself.

    • Mark Uyemura says:

I know lots of people who’ve had to replace their iPhones because they’ve been washed or dropped . Don’t be deterred though, you’ll see web sites pop up over night selling all types of covers to protect your investment.

  • hooten says:

Re: Mr. Brusic’s comment: I find it interesting that he is clamoring about the possible dovetail effect for the OC Register (i.e. content producers) on the iPad, yet the OC Register doesn’t have a viable mobile device application at present. Where is your iPhone App today? The NYT, WSJ, and USAT all get it and have created very viable applications.

The iPad’s success or failure will depend on content, not the device’s sleek design. So I commend the OC Register’s editor for thinking in those terms. However, that sentiment is rather dubious considering the lack of forward-thinking at the OCR today.

  • Dan says:

Would think about if it’s on verizon. AT&T is terrible…..

  • ishdakuteb says:

rather buy a netbook (almost about haft price if you can find a good deal) instead of this ipad…. what you guys thinks? :)

  • Mark Uyemura says:

From The Daily Beast and Gizmodo: Apple launched its iPad tablet Wednesday after weeks of buzz, but not everyone is impressed by the new product. The folks at Gizmodo got their hands on one, and have listed 10 things about the iPad that displease them: Among their complaints are that the bezel is big and ugly, there’s no camera, the touch keyboard is awkward, the name is stupid, there’s no Flash, and it needs a lot of ugly adapters. Especially irksome is the fact that it can’t multitask-”If this is supposed to be a replacement for netbooks, how can it possibly not have multitasking?… I can’t have my Twitter app open at the same time as my browser? I can’t have AIM open at the same time as my email? Are you kidding me? This alone guarantees that I will not buy this product,” the blog complains.

  • Mark Uyemura says:

It’s not a laptop replacement like everybody wishes it is. It’s a large iPod Touch. Two interesting things about it: First, the processor (CPU), putting them into instant competition with Intel and AMD, and indirectly with companies like Broadcom. Tom’s hardware has a look at the new Apple CPU: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/apple-ipad-iphone-ipod,9522.html

The other interesting thing is the model for service. Don’t you wish you could get a month to month contract with your cell phone? Maybe it’s a dawn for a new way to charge. Buying the phone/tablet for full price, and charging for service when you want it. The next logical step is opening (unlocking) the hardware to communicate with any network: Verizon, AT&T, T-mo. Now that would be exciting.

  • craig kaplan says:

If it is an Ipad… like a pad of paper; does that mean you can write on it? Ability to jot little notes, etc. would be worth it.

  • Eric Cooper says:

Super Huge BAD idea! Apple must be REEEALLY desperate!

  • DanGarion says:

I already have an iPhone that is much smaller and can do most of the things the iPad can do. The device is missing some key elements; camera, multitasking, and the ability to render flash. It’s not better than any of the ‘netbooks’ that are out there, that are cheaper. Just putting the name Apple on a nerfed tablet doesn’t make it great.

  • Spence says:

Since the iPad is really just a big iPod Touch, will the iPod Touch be renamed the mini-Pad?

  • Elixir says:

There is so much “doom and gloom” around the iPad. But don’t we remember that those nay-sayers said the same thing with the iPod and iPhone? I plan on getting mine this month and doing a full review of it on my blog. Can’t wait!
