AT&T’s U-verse Internet speeds up 33%

March 30th, 2010, 8:39 am · 9 Comments · posted by

AT&T has expanded its faster Max Turbo Internet to all U-verse customers. The Internet plan offers 24 Mbps downstream and 3 Mbps upstream speed.

That’s well above cable Internet speeds in Orange County but below the maximum of Verizon FiOS, another telecom offering an alternative TV and Internet service. FiOS offers download speeds of up to 50 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 20 Mbps.

Max Turbo, which launched in Texas and Missouri in December, is $65 month if bundled with U-verse TV service. It’s $95/month for eligible small business customers. Existing plans, including the previously top speed Max Plus at 18 Mbps, are still available (see chart below).

AT&T is available in limited parts of Orange County. Cities include Aliso Viejo, Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, Fullerton, Garden Grove, La Habra, La Palma, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Orange, Placentia, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Ana, Stanton, Villa Park, Westminster, and Yorba Linda.

The higher speed on MaxT. was listed on their website already last week when I was starting to price out a package, intending to switch from Cox.
Still a bit hesitant, since I’m not sure how far my residence is from the closest At&T switchbox. Reading the U-verse forums, I see posts about compression being more noticeable in their HD pictures than w/cable.
Still like their “residential gateway” approach linking the whole house’s TVs together if you wish.

Save your money, when I got AT&T I had great speed, over time they decreased it and started charging more. I’m going to get rid of AT&T ASAP, it’s a teaser rate, after the years is up they want to stick it to you.

Yeah, I saw that too. I still have my “teaser” rate. But they took $10 off all my services after it changed. My phone service went up by $5 but they could not change it. They put my on hold and gave me $10 off my HD fee so now I don’t pay for that for 6 months. All you have to do is ask. I just bumped my internet to 18 megs at the same rate as the 12 megs. If you don’t ask, you don’t get. If you don’t get switch.

Chris, they will be happy to come out and test your line to make sure you get the speed. When I had mine installed at the beginning of ’09 that’s one of the first things they did to make sure it was working properly. I was getting on average (before the change) of about 11.5 mps down and about 1.3 up. No complaints with 3 computers and a xbox360 running at the same time.

At&t sucks. They all suck but at least with cable you wont have to pay all the extra charges. I know cable sucks too. At&t is nothing but a rip off. They didnt even want to spend money on their old plant to provide better picture. Get ready for it you will see.

A la carte prices? I’m guessing they won’t install it for Internet access only.

  • Nat says:

I agree with Jojo! When I got my service it was great. As time went on my “high speed” went to low speed and at the same rate.

  • Jg says:

Nat, how much did your speed decrease? What was your test speed? I’m sure you know this, but sometimes it’s not the line it can be the computer. Have you done a preventative maintenance on your machine? Emptied out the cache, defragged your hard drive changed any settings during the year? added new software? got some wireless or other computers running on your line? how about a firewall? What about virus protection programs (maybe you have more than one–)? Just a thought, no disrespect intended? I always test my line whenever I make a change or I see a dip in speed that is significant but that could be anything on the list. Cable was the worst, frequent outages, in my neighborhood everyone seemed to be gaming, TV sucked and was always going out and at one time I had no TV or internet for 2 weeks. I would not trade AT&T to go back to cable. I did have a problem with my DVR box and got service within 2 hours of my call. So I can’t complain, although there are trucks all over the place doing installations so it’s not like they can’t find someone. Yeah, I’m a fan. What can I say. But when the next best thing comes out I’ll probably get that too. Peace.

The tipping point for us staying with Cox will be if my wife can live without her Digital Tier channels (300-360) w/ all the Encores & Lifetime etc.
Pulling them out will put $12/month back in our pockets. Noticed that UV didn’t have those in the U-200 TV package I’d planned on. so UVs pricing wasn’t as attractive as I’d hoped. Been w/ Cox for 13 years & aside from the pricing bumps, they’ve really been pretty goo overall.
    Ah decisions….
