April 9th, 2010, 7:27 am · 23 Comments · posted by

AT&T has added new 3G wireless cell sites in Irvine and Orange. The company could not provide details on the locations.

The 3G cell sites includes the recent upgrade to High-Speed Packet Access 7.2 technology, which should speed up Internet browsing and data transmission on the cellular network.

The company also announced new sites in San Bernardino and Chino and one in Kern County’s Shafter.

AT&T plans to add 200 cell sites in California, which should be good news to local iPhone users.

Sorry it too late. We all switched to Tmobile and Verizon..

ATT sucks big time in SoCal.

T-mobil rocks! The only company to offer wi-fi calling. Check out the Blackberry Bold 9700. We had three freinds with us in Costa Rica, none of which could make calls with their iPhones. All we had to do was connect to any wireless router and we were up and talking.
And . . . NO ROAMING CHARGES! Effectively, we talked for 900 minutes with zero cost.
T-Mobile is the way of the future.

I call BS on this one. AT&T can at least give general cross streets of where the “new” (read never existed before) sites are….not existing sites that received a bandwidth/UMTS upgrade. While I know that cities like Irvine and others are very difficult to deal with for building new sites, I find it hard to believe that they will add 200 brand new sites anytime soon. Maybe in 20 years at the rate they are going.

Wow, this is truly an act of God, since as an Irvine resident, we NIMBYs fight this stuff like crazy. I love no bars or zero bars of signal strength on my cell phone. Irvine-onians unite!

T-mobil Rocks. The only company to offer wi-fi calling. Get a Blackberry and connect to any wi-fi router to make calls free of roaming charges. We talked for 900 minutes in Costa Rica while our friends with iPhones watched and could do nothing. AT&T is the past – wi-fi calling is the future.

I finally broke down and switched to AT&T from Verizon for the Iphone and At&t is a JOKE! I cannot keep ANY call connected. 1 min, 2 mins then beep beep beep (Call Failed)

Whatever you do avoid the AT&T store on Main in Orange. They will try to push you into signing up for their UVerse plan and when you tell them no they act rude and shove you out the door. It was one of the worst customer service interactions I have ever had.

As far as AT&T coverage I have calls dropped on my brand new LG Xenon all over OC. I can’t even keep a call going to their own customer service people while I am in my house. Calls drop in downtown Santa Ana, Tustin, Brea, Irvine, etc etc. And it is definately BS when they cannot provide details on supposed new cell sites they have installed. What are they saying? “We’ve installed some new ones but we just don’t remember where we put them? Gimme a break. It’s just damage control for their public image and for sales. They probably have customers jumping ship left and right and need to try to stem the flow of lost business.

AT&T is a joke!!! I had full service in my house until about 6 months ago. I now have to go outside to get any service to make a call. Then the call just gets dropped after a couple of minutes!!! I want out of my contract, but of course, they won’t allow it without paying a fee. I’m thinking it will be worth paying it just to lose them!!!!

    • ocguy says:

here’s what I did to get out of my contract, I was in 1 1/2 yrs of a 2 yr contract. I called ATT everytime I dropped a call or had problems. Go directly to a supervisor. When they see your history they may let you cancel with a pro-rated ETL fee instead of the whole fee.

      good luck

  • VZ4LYF says:

and I thought there was a MORATORIUM on any new cell site builds in the city of Irvine due to zoning and other concerns?!???? Maybe thats why they can’t give exact details on the locations?

  • john says:

    WARNING, DON’T GET AT&T.
    INTERNET WORKS SPORADICALLY,
    COUNTLESS DROPPED, OR LOST CALLS
THEY GIVE YOU ROLL OVER MINUTES, AND MY GOD YOU WILL NEED THEM WITH ALL THOSE DROPPED CALLS

  • john says:

2 TOWERS UP, 1,000,000,000 MORE TO GO.

  • Sarah says:

I hope the coverage is ok there. We’ve getting ready to move there and I recently got an Iphone. I loved Verizon, but got a used Iphone, so I had to switch. I would switch back to Verizon if they get the Iphone though.

  • ocguy says:

what a joke. I switched my service in the middle of my ATT contract.
I couldnt make/recieve calls within 2-3 blocks of my house & when I could get service the call dropped. Every time I called ATT they said I was within a mile of a tower. I dont care if the tower is in my living room, I still cant make a call. ATT is the WORST service I’ve ever had. I have Verizon now, a little more expensive but minus ALL the hassle & bad reception. Of course ATT has the fewest dropped calls. How can you drop a call if you cant make one?

  • Loretta says:

We have full ATT bars in Lake Forest at Lake Forest Dr. and Jeronimo.

  • ChrisK says:

T-Mobile is the way to go. Why? Wi-Fi calling. And they are the ONLY company to offer it. Talked FREE in Costa Rica for 900 minutes!
Try doing that with ANY carrier. All you need is a UMA enabled phone. Our friends and their iPhones couldn’t connect all week, and when they did, it cost them $2.50 per minute. And you still get lousy iPhone reception in Talega.

  • Dave Clark says:

In or near my home in The Meadows park on Jeffrey at Walnut, AT&T has miserable service on the iPhone. One or two bars at most. I’ve come close to suing them, and may just do that.

    • safedriver says:

Good luck, you better read your contract, yep the “fine print” that everyone skips first before you waste your money on a lawsuit.

  • chuck says:

not sure if this has anything to do with these towers, but I’m a student at UCI, and while studying in the science library one day, a bunch of executives were being given a tour, and one of the guys pointed out the window and said that’s where the new cell tower is gonna be. Not sure if its for ATT, just thought it might be relevant since we don’t know the location yet. cheers.

  • Rocker says:

Too late, AT&T. If not for the iPhone, you would be dust. Once the iPhone comes to Verizon, that’ll be the end of them.

  • Sar says:

Wow..I have never had a problem with AT&T. I’ve been with them since they were Singular. Guess in in the minority!
