Very surprised that none of these lists carry two of the best free apps- I use them every day: Jott- a voice dictation/transcription/email service, and the Associated Press Mobile service. With Jott and my hands-free headset, I can dictate emails to anyone while driving. Depending on the setting you set in the contacts files, the email can go out as a text, instead, OR both. The email has a link to the actual voice message– or as my girlfriend noted: “Gee I don’t even have to READ my email anymore!” You can dictate notes to yourself, which can then be emailed or stored as “notes” on your iPhone. Transcription accuracy is well over 95%.
AP is an up-to-the-minute newswire service that can be set for national or local news or specific categories (e.g. Sports). You can get rid of a newspaper subscription with this service AND be on top of the latest news.

Jott is a good service beyond the iPhone. Some bloggers here have been testing it out. And iGirl did mention she liked AP’s new service. (Maybe iGirl will soon offer up her own list of favorites? Hint, hint…) Thanks for pointing them out Melissa. — Gadgetress

8 28 08: Since recommending it so highly, I feel obligated to add that Jott (currently free) will turn to a paid subscription service as of September 8. While I wouldn’t mind paying a one-time Apps Store fee, a monthly subscription of $8.99 for the same services I now use is waaaay too much. Effective today, I have switched to Dial2Go. I read about it on another blog, have tried it several times, and it works well. Plus, it’s free. Same services at Jott, wiht none of the “early” bugs. In some ways, it’s actually easier to use than Jott. Don’t need to download it thru the Apps store at all- just go to http://www.dial2go.com, register (your name, email and phone number– that’s it) and you can start using it. You set up your contacts just like with Jott and it actually works thru several other networking istes, as well.
Currently, it’s free- we’ll see how long that last.
Big mistake, Jott– you’re about to lose alot of business.
