2 iPods? JVC offers convenient charger

June 23rd, 2008, 7:53 am by

JVC may be one of the first companies to act on Apple’s insatiable thirst to frequently update the iPod and iPhone, causing consumers everywhere to rush out and buy the latest model. JVC’s new dual-iPod charger makes it more convenient to listen to two iPods or iPhones and charge them simultaneously.

The new JVC NX-PN7  also plays the two iPods through the docking station’s speaker. JVC adds an AM/FM tuner and clock to the dock. There’s also a video output so it can be connected to a TV. But if you don’t have a second iPod, there is an analog audio input to connect other portable  music devices.

Time saver? Yes. It’ll keep two pods charged and ready to go. But at $149.95, it’s overpriced for the budget-minded gadget lover. Ah well. There’s also this home-made dual iPod charger.

Sonnet cuts price of iPhone battery charger

June 10th, 2008, 5:07 pm by

Sonnet Technologies’ Volta rechargeable iPod battery kitSo… the new iPhone is cheaper than the old one but the monthly fees are higher. You’ve got to save money somewhere.

Sonnet Technologies, an Irvine company that makes upgrade kits for Macs, just cut 25 percent off the price of its Volta rechargeable battery pack for the iPod. It’s now $29.95 (used to be $39.95). I haven’t tried it but Sonnet claims it “extends playback times by up to 300%.”

Plus, Sonnet expects it to be compatible with the new iPhone. It already works with many iPod models and the original iPhone. An interesting note: when the Volta is fully charged, it has enough juice to charge an iPod battery three times. More details at Sonnet’s site.

Men get some PodWare love, too

September 12th, 2007, 4:00 am by

PodWare, the Buena Park company that makes women’s shirts that hold iPods, just added men’s shirts to their collection. men’s shirt

The men’s shirts that graphic designer Sal Loredo promised when Tamara first blogged about PodWare in May, are here in black and white with large Apple-power button logos. The cotton shirts are double-needle hemmed to prevent them from stretching from the weight of the iPods.

The shirts work with the first-generation iPod shuffles and the first and second-generation Nanos (1, 2 and 4-gigabyte models). Sal says the shirts are for those who “use their iPod in daily activities.” The men’s shirts cost $25.99 each.

SanDisk’s new Sansa takes swipe at iPod

September 10th, 2007, 5:07 pm by

SanDisk Sansa ViewSanDisk doesn’t hold back one bit about where its new Sansa View MP3 player fits in the digital music market. Here’s the pitch I just got from the company:

Last week Apple unveiled their products for the holiday season. Today SanDisk – Apple’s largest competitor – announced the Sansa View, a video MP3 player that easily surpasses the new Nano with more features and twice the capacity (16GB) at an unbeatable price point. The 16GB Sansa View will be available in October for just $199 – the same price as the 8GB Nano.

The pitch continues…

The Sansa View is twice the memory story (sic) capacity and rich with features that Apple’s player doesn’t have: a large(r) bright 2.4” screen for viewing movies, videos and pictures, a FM radio, a built in microphone and recording capabilities, and an expandable MicroSD/SDHC card slot for additional storage or moving your content to a mobile phone. Plus, the battery life is the largest on the market.

My two cents: A lot of these bonus features that aren’t found on iPods have been on other MP3 players before. Apple has had plenty of opportunity to add removable storage or a built-in microphone but it hasn’t. And yet, it’s still the tops. I guess consumers have voted.

The Sansa View will be available in October.

NBC and Apple show down

September 7th, 2007, 3:00 am by

NBCandiTunesBetter get your fix for The Office, LOST and other NBC shows on iTunes now.

After a tiff over pricing for NBC’s shows on Apple’s iTunes the NBC-iTunes contract was pulled.

According to a Reuters article, Steve Jobs said yesterday:

“We hope they’ll reconsider their decisions over time and maybe find out that iTunes and iPods are a great way to digitally distribute their content to tens or maybe hundreds of millions of customers around the world.”

A New York Times article said that the NBC vs. Apple highlights “the escalating tension between Apple and media companies, which are unhappy that Apple will not give them more control over the pricing of songs and videos that are sold on iTunes.”

Of course, you’ll be able to download all the new NBC shows at Amazon.com’s Unbox, which announced the new deal with NBC the day before Steve’s apology. Pilot episodes will be free and start showing up Sept. 10 at Unbox before the actual broadcast. Ensuing episodes will show up the day after broadcast for $1.99.
