Apple computer news coming at 10ish

October 14th, 2008, 9:30 am by

Lots of Twittering, live blogging going on regarding Apple’s 10 a.m. press conference at its headquarters. I won’t be there (been there, done that) but I will post the news as soon as I get it for the Mac addicts who visit this site. True addicts, however, should follow the live coverage. Let me point you to some sites:

Gizmodo: Bunch of guy geeks live blogging since 8:35 a.m. — mostly about baldness.

Engadget: Will start live blogging at 10

CrunchGear: Also starting at 10

LA Times blog: Plans to Twitter at 10

Big Rumor: An Apple laptop for under $1,000

New iPods and more from Apple today

I’m following live reports from around the web of this morning’s Apple news conference. But I’m only highlighting the key points. The news so far:

  • Updated iPhone 2.1 firmware to fix all the bugs. Free and available Friday.
  • New  games: Spore, Real Soccer 09, Need For Speed: Undercover
  • Thinner iPod Touches too. The 8GB is $229, 16GB is $299 and 32GB is $399.
  • New in-ear phones for $79.
  • A new iPod nano — the skinniest yet! It has an accelerometer. Shake it and it shuffles the songs. (Does that mean I can’t run with it and listen to the full song?) It’s $149 for the 8GB model, $199 for the 16GB model and comes in 8 super-bright colors.
  • New iPods in 120 GB for $249 and 160 GBs (the 80 GB is being discontinued).
  • iTunes 8 announced.
  • HD TV shows  for $2.99. They’re watchable on a computer or Apple TV (which is a computer!).

Looks like that’s it folks. No more ‘One more thing…” Hmm. Stay tuned for more photos.

The image below doesn’t quite do the skinnier new iPod nano justice. But it’s the official photo Apple is sending out:

Best Buy to start selling 3G iPhone in Sept.

August 12th, 2008, 10:06 pm by

Looks like Apple iPhone shoppers will have another store to wait in line for come September when Best Buy starts selling the trendy communicator on Sept. 7, according to an Associated Press story and several other reports that published Tuesday night.

Apparently, there is enough iPhone stock to supply Best Buy’s 970 stores, plus 16 smaller Best Buy Mobile stores. Adding this to the AT&T stores plus Apple’s own stores, brings the number of places in U.S. selling iPhones to 3,175.

Still, even though the much-coveted gadget has been available for the past month, people are still lining up outside Apple stores to get their’s — not waiting in line because of limited supply, but because it takes so darn long to get signed up to AT&T and get the phone activated. I saw this myself on Saturday while visiting the Apple store in Pasadena. At least a dozen people were in line for the phone with an Apple employee at the front directing traffic (though at the AT&T store down the street, there were plenty of helpful, unbusy employees).

Orange County’s own iPhone supply, at least in Apple stores, continues to be quite stocked as of tonight with only the 16 GB white version sold out at the Irvine Spectrum store. At any AT&T store, if none are in stock, one can be ordered for you.

iPhones are still widely available in OC

The company is based in Santa Monica, but was acquired today by Fabrik in Irvine.

The all-aluminum drive (available in a 1-terabyte or a 500-gigabyte version) is designed as a tool for people needing large amounts of memory on-the-go, for example editing movies while away from a desk. The “G-RAID mini” drive includes a can be used with a FireWire 800, FireWire 400 or USB 2.0 connection. It is ready out-of-the-box to work with Apple computers, as well as Windows machines.

Suggested retail pricing has not yet been announced, but both models will come with a three-year factory warranty and will be available in March. The drive charges when connected to a FireWire port, eliminating the need for a separate AC power supply cable. The drive supports simultaneous playback of multiple layers of video in Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere and Avid Xpress Pro.

“G-Technology continues to offer the most powerful external storage solutions available,” said Roger Mabon, vice president of sales and marketing for Fabrik’s G-Technology product group. “The G-RAID mini is a perfect addition to our family, as it supports our strong following of creative professionals who need reliable, high capacity, high-performance storage.”
